Golf: Big-hitting Daly to play in Singapore Open

SINGAPORE: Two-time Major champion John Daly is the latest big name confirmed to compete in next month's US$6 million Barclays Singapore Open, organisers said on Wednesday.

The American -- whose last PGA victory came in San Diego in 2004 -- will join compatriot Phil Mickelson as well as world number one Rory McIlroy at the event from November 8 to 11.

South Korean Y. E. Yang, the first Asian to win a Major, and 2011 British Open champion Darren Clarke of Northern Ireland will also play in the tournament together with three-time winner Adam Scott.

Daly, who is ranked 198th in the world, is nicknamed "Long John" for his distinctive, far-reaching drives off the tee.

The big-hitter has to rely on invitations from organisers to compete in tournaments as he has not held a PGA Tour card since 2006.

His best performance this season was a fifth place finish in the Reno-Tahoe Open in the United States.
