WACO ? A multi-county Central Texas program for farmers and ranchers conducted online by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service is scheduled Dec. 13.
The District 8 Farm and Ranch Seminar will be offered at 12 AgriLife Extension county offices using online delivery, said Zach Davis, AgriLife Extension agent for Johnson County.
?This program will be presented through the Internet with live interactive streaming video to 12 locations across Central Texas,? he said. ?With the continued integration of technology into farming and ranching, we hope to showcase various uses available to producers such as using aerial mapping to develop brush control and herbicide use plans.?
The seminars will be broadcast in the following counties: ?Bell County (Temple); Comanche and Eastland (DeLeon); Ellis (Waxahachie); Erath, Hood and Somervell (Stephenville) Hamilton and Coryell (Hamilton), Hill (Hillsboro); Johnson and Bosque (Cleburne); Limestone (Groesbeck); McLennan (Waco); Navarro (Corsicana); Robertson, Falls, Leon and Milam (Franklin) and Williamson (Georgetown).
Private applicator license holders must obtain 15 hours of continuing education units every five years to renew/recertify their license, Davis said.
?These hours must be at least two hours of laws and regulations, two hours of integrated pest management, and any mix of these and general hours to equal the required 15 hours of continuing education units,? he said.
Licensed commercial and non-commercial applicators are required to recertify every year by obtaining five continuing education credits with one credit each from two of the following categories: laws and regulations, integrated pest management or drift minimization, according to Davis.
The seminar will provide participants with the opportunity to receive up to eight continuing education units: five hours general, one hour in drift minimization, one hour in integrated pest management, one hour in laws and regulations. Topics and speakers include:

Can life emerge on planets around cooling stars?
ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? Astronomers find planets in strange places and wonder if they might support life. One such place would be in orbit around a white or brown dwarf. While neither is a star like the sun, both glow and so could be orbited by planets with the right ingredients for life.
No terrestrial, or Earth-like planets have yet been confirmed orbiting white or brown dwarfs, but there is no reason to assume they don't exist. However, new research by Rory Barnes of the University of Washington and Ren? Heller of Germany's Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam hints that planets orbiting white or brown dwarfs will prove poor candidates for life.
White dwarfs are the hot cores of dead stars and brown dwarfs are failed stars, objects not massive enough to start nuclear burning as the sun does. In theory, both can be bright enough to theoretically support a habitable zone -- that swath of space just right for an orbiting planet's surface water to be in liquid form, thus giving life a chance.
The inner edge of that just-right zone is where a planet starts to become a runaway greenhouse, such as Venus. That heating phenomenon removes the planet's surface water and all chance of life -- of habitability -- is forever lost.
White and brown dwarfs share a common characteristic that sets them apart from normal stars like the sun: They slowly cool and become less luminous over time. And as they cool, their habitable zones gradually shrink inward. Thus, a planet that is found in the center of the habitable zone today must previously have spent time near the zone's deadly inner edge.
Because of their past, such planet would "face a difficult path to habitability," Barnes said, even if they're discovered right in that habitable zone. Call it a sort of cosmic background check, revealing that the worlds probably lost the means to host life long before they became habitable zone residents.
"These planets, if we find them today in a current habitable zone, previously had to have gone through a phase which sterilized them forever," Barnes said. Heller added, "So, even if they are located in the habitable zone today, they are dead."
Barnes is the lead author of a paper published in November in the journal Astrobiology; and Heller is co-author.

'We had the best crop in years': Residents feel pinch after FDA shutters plant
PORTALES, N.M. (AP) ? Farmers in a revered peanut-growing region along the New Mexico-Texas border should be celebrating one of the best harvests in recent memory.
Instead, millions of pounds of their prized sweet Valencia peanuts sit in barns at a peanut butter plant shuttered for two months amid a salmonella outbreak that sickened 41 people in 20 states.
Farmers are worried about getting paid for their peanuts, nearly a third the plant's 150 workers have been laid off, and residents wonder what toll an increasingly contentious showdown between the nation's largest organic peanut butter plant and federal regulators could ultimately have on the region's economy.
The tension boiled over when the Food and Drug Administration on Monday said it was suspending Sunland Inc.'s registration to operate because of repeated safety violations, meaning the plant will remain indefinitely shut down as the company appeals the decision. The company had planned to reopen some its operations this week after voluntarily recalling hundreds of products and closing its processing and peanut butter plants in late September and early October.
Many in this flat, dusty and solidly Republican farm town of about 20,000 denounce the FDA's tactics as unfair and unnecessarily heavy-handed ? and become defensive about the shutdown of the largest private employer in town.
"We had the best crop in years, and then these (expletives) came in and started this," said resident and local telecomm worker Boyd Evans.
For the first time ever, the FDA is using authority granted under a 2011 food safety law signed by President Barack Obama that allows the agency to shut food operations without a court hearing.
The FDA said inspectors found samples of salmonella in 28 different locations in the plant, in 13 nut butter samples and in one sample of raw peanuts. Inspectors found improper handling of the products, unclean equipment and uncovered trailers of peanuts outside the facility that were exposed to rain and birds. Inspectors also said employees did not have access to hand-washing sinks, and dirty hands had direct contact with ready-to-package peanuts.
The FDA has inspected the plant at least four times over the past five years, each time finding violations. Michael Taylor, the FDA's deputy commissioner for foods, said the agency's inspections after the outbreak found even worse problems than what had been seen there before.
The salmonella outbreak was traced to Trader Joe's peanut butter produced at the plant. Sunland produces products for a number of national grocery and retail chains, and New Mexico Peanut Growers Association President Wayne Baker says the industry generates about $60 million in the region each year.
Valencias are a variety of peanuts that come almost exclusively from eastern New Mexico. Because of their sweet flavor, they are favored for organic and natural peanut butter products because they require few additives.
The peanut is celebrated every year at the town's annual Peanut Valley Festival, and most residents have stories related to peanuts, whether growing up on a peanut farm, helping to haul them to harvest or knowing peanut workers or farmers.
"Peanuts is, like, everything here," said local shopkeeper Brittany Mignard.
The plant's retail store remains open, although its shelves are bare of its own products. The few items remaining include peanut brittle made in Lubbock, Texas. The shelves are stocked with jelly, but no peanut butter.
Baker, who is also a Sunland board member, said the company had never been notified of any past violations. And the company has vehemently denied FDA allegations that it knowingly shipped any potentially tainted products.
Plant officials said they were blindsided by the FDA's suspension on Monday. Just hours before it was announced, the plant had announced plans to start shelling the bumper crop on Tuesday. Plant officials said they had notified the FDA last week of their plans to reopen the processing operations while waiting for approval to resume making peanut butter.
"The FDA is overreaching its power and putting out information that isn't true," Baker said. "We don't understand what is going on. We don't think we are guilty."
FDA officials wouldn't comment on his allegations, saying it was an ongoing investigation.
Food safety expert and Cornell University professor Bob Gravani said given the number of salmonella outbreaks in recent years, he believes the FDA is being heavily scrutinized about why they are not using their rules more frequently or more aggressively.
Putting aside the "he-said, she-said" between the FDA and the company, he said, "I would say suspension is warranted in this case."
This is not the first major outbreak since the FDA gained authority to pull a facility's registration in the 2011 food safety law. An outbreak of listeria in cantaloupe in 2011 is linked to at least 30 deaths and investigators found similar conditions at Jensen Farms in Colorado. Unlike Sunland, however, Jensen Farms did not attempt to restart operations after the recall and FDA investigation. The company later filed for bankruptcy.
Baker said officials have been trying for the past two months to cooperate with the FDA to get the plant reopened.
"That hasn't worked," he said. "But we are not going to give up. We are going to fight this. We have got no choice."
He said officials have begun calling the state's senators and congressman and talking with other agricultural groups about getting help in Washington with an appeal of the FDA action. No hearing has yet been scheduled.
Coburn said about 30 percent of the plant's workers were laid off Monday.
Although peanuts can be stored for a while, Coburn and Baker acknowledged that time is of the essence for getting to work on what Coburn said were "many, many millions" of pounds harvested from this year's crop.
Farmers, Baker acknowledged, are worried about getting paid. But he said Sunland has committed to paying them for their crops.
Under a worst-case scenario, he said, Sunland could sell the peanuts to other producers.

What is the state of economics 75 years on - economics is more akin to a crawl rather than a walk. Economists model the economy as if it is near equilibrium all of the time. But the reality is that complex systems have far from equilibrium behaviour. Complex behaviour cannot be predicted beyond a very short window - something that is well understood by weather forecasts but not by most mainstream economists.

Chrome for Android updated
Chrome for Android has been updated to fix some stability issues, says Google.
This news comes on the back of Google’s announcement last week on their Google+ page that it will bring mobile Chrome version numbers up to speed with desktop versions by early next year. With desktop Chrome at version 23 right now and mobile Chrome at 18, we can expect releases to be streamlined eventually.
For reference, the stable channel for the latest Android Chrome release for ARM devices is 18.0.1025469 and 18.0.1026322 for x86 devices.

Illuminating the no-man's land of waters' surface: Strong electric charge observed at the interface between oil and water is not due to impurities
ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? Water repelling molecules are said to be hydrophobic. The hydration -- or formation of water interfaces around hydrophobic molecules -- is important for many biological processes: protein folding, membrane formation, transport of proteins across an interface, the transmission of action potentials across membranes. It is involved as well in the process of creating mayonnaise, or in the fact that you can get rid of fat with soap. Hydrophobic interfaces although long studied, are poorly understood.
Here's an amusing kitchen-table experiment to illustrate waters unusual properties: put a drop of pure insulating oil in a glass of pure, non-conducting water, and create an electric field using two wires hooked up to a battery. You'll see the oil move from the negative to the positive pole of the little circuit you've created. You have created charge in a mixture that was neutral, and a huge amount of it too, judging from the speed at which the droplets move. The same thing happens for gas bubbles in water; the phenomenon of charging applies to all hydrophobic/water interfaces.
A century of debates
It's not a new discovery; scientists have observed the phenomenon in the middle of the 19th century. But despite more than a century of research, the reason why such a huge electric charge exists is still the subject of heated debate.
In an article published this week in Angewandte Chemie -- a journal of reference in the field -- EPFL scientist Sylvie Roke challenges a hypothesis put forward last spring in the same journal. With experimental proof to back her up, the holder of the Julia Jacobi chair in photomedicine makes her case: the phenomenon is not caused by the inevitable "impurities" present in oils, as her colleagues claim, but rather by certain intrinsic properties of the water molecules involved.

For proof, Roke turns to the technologies in which she is an expert -- nonlinear optics and light diffusion. Using carefully filtered lasers channeled through a complex circuit of mirrors and lenses, she "hits" her sample -- barely a drop -- and measures the wavelength of the light that escapes from it. With this she can detect whether or not there are nanoscopic molecules on the interface between the oil and the water.
The precision of the observations "shows that negative charges exist even in a total absence of surface impurities, and thus the explanation put forward by my colleagues, which was derived from charge measurements and chemical titrations of the bulk liquids, doesn't hold up," says Roke. "We have developed a unique apparatus that can distinctly measure the interfacial structure of a layer on the sub-nanometer length scale that surrounds a droplet of oil in water. Thus, we can 'see' what is on the interface, and do not have to deduce it from comparing bulk properties, which is far less accurate."
Disproving a hypothesis isn't enough to explain a phenomenon, however. Trip home smooth for many Thanksgiving travelers

SEATTLE --?Despite a predicted increase in the number of holiday travelers, Americans returning home after the long Thanksgiving weekend found generally good weather, few airport delays and at times manageable conditions on the nation's highways.
Travel appeared to run smoothly Sunday ? typically the busiest travel day of the year ? as millions journeyed home after feasting with family and friends, even though there was little elbow room on packed buses, trains and airplanes.
Many travelers strategically hit the road early in the day or waited until much later to avoid possible bumper-to-bumper traffic.
Craig Haft, 57, left Cincinnati with his wife and daughter around 6:15 a.m. to drive to their home in Fairfax, Va., after visiting family. At midday, he reported smooth driving.
"It went fine on Wednesday and has been good so far today," he said.
Some were upbeat despite long journeys ahead. Andy Harbison, 38, said he didn't mind the 8-hour drive back to Harrisburg, Pa. after visiting family in Michigan.
The roads were good, he said, and he simply enjoyed being with family after being away from them during previous deployments to Iraq and Kuwait while in the National Guard.
Experts had predicted a slight rise in the number of people traveling this Thanksgiving weekend compared to last year. Some 43.6 million Americans were expected to journey 50 miles or more between Wednesday and Sunday, and more of them were likely to be driving while fewer were flying, according to AAA's yearly analysis.
Mauro Scappa and his wife, Chris, and their two children were among those who chose not to take to the skies. They braced themselves for delays as they waited at New York's Penn Station for a train back to Washington, near their home in Falls Church, Va. But their train was expected on time Sunday morning.
"We definitely wanted to avoid the airport on Thanksgiving weekend, for sure," Scappa said.
Renee Kerns, her husband Mike and their two children left about 30 minutes earlier than usual to catch a flight to home to California. They anticipated longer lines at the Washington-area Dulles International Airport, but sailed through security in about 10 minutes and were at their gate for their 8:30 a.m. flight to Oakland, Calif., more than an hour before their flight.
"It was fine," Renee Kerns said of getting through security. Added her husband: "Easy, but we're early."
Helped by dry weather and mostly clear skies, both O'Hare and Midway international airports in Chicago reported normal operations Sunday with no delays.
Leonard Reddick, 29, waited near downtown Chicago for a bus back to Flint, Mich. He traveled on Thanksgiving day to see his sister in the Chicago area, explaining that it's his trick for avoiding the huge crowds on the day before the holiday. He also liked the $84 roundtrip fare.
Reddick, who works at General Motors, was rethinking one decision as he was gearing up for the five-hour trip back home to Michigan: He had declined the turkey and mac and cheese leftovers because he thought it might mess up his luggage.
The tens of millions of holiday travelers also included a few thousand users of Megabus, the ultra-cheap inter-city network popular among students and the creative class. Shane Dillon, 26, a librarian now living and seeking work in Chicago, joined the throng waiting to board at Detroit's Rosa Parks Transit Center for the return trip to the Windy City. He was in the area visiting relatives in Allen Park, Mich.
"It was great to see family and friends. The food was good," Dillon said. A few days, though, was enough. "I'm glad to be going home."
Dense fog greeted travelers at Union Station in Los Angeles early Sunday, but it didn't appear to cause problems.
Mike Lansing, 63, and his wife Kay, 60, opted to take Amtrak for the first time to their home in the San Francisco Bay area after weighing high gas prices. They spent a week in LA with their daughter, son-in-law and new grandson.
He said he's relieved not to have to get behind the wheel. "I don't know if we're really saving any money, but it's an adventure!" said Kay Lansing.
At the Boise Airport, Charles Beyer, 59, waited for luggage after having just arrived from Portland, Ore., where he visited his son and daughter. He said he found most of his fellow passengers complacent about the challenges of traveling during the holiday weekend through packed airports.
"The good old days of pulling up to the curb and getting onto the airplane in five minutes are long gone," he said.

Car Pollution Linked to Autism
Children exposed to higher levels of air pollution early in life may have an increased risk of autism, a new study suggests.
In the study, children living in areas with high levels of traffic-generated air pollution during their first year of life were three times more likely to have autism than children living in areas with low levels.
There was also a link between exposure to air pollution in the womb ? particularly during late pregnancy ? and an increased risk of autism, according to the study.
The findings held even after the researchers accounted for factors possibly related to autism risk, including a child's gender and ethnicity, their parent's education and smoking in pregnancy.
The results add to previous findings linking exposure to air pollution with autism risk
However, the new study shows only an association, not a cause-effect link, and the researchers did not gather information on the children's nutrition, or their exposure to indoor pollutants and secondhand smoke, which could affect the results.
"Although additional research to replicate these findings is needed, the public health implications of these findings are large because air pollution exposure is common and may have lasting neurological effects," the researchers write in the Nov. 26 issue of the journal Archives of General Psychiatry.
Autism and air pollution
The study included 524 children between ages 2 and 5 living in California, including 279 children with autism. Most children lived in areas around Sacramento, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Heather Volk, an environmental epidemiologist at the University of Southern California, and colleagues used the children's addresses to estimate their level of exposure to air pollution from traffic during pregnancy and the first year of life. The researchers also used information from air-pollution monitoring systems throughout the area that took into account road traffic volume and other measures.
Children living in areas estimated to have the highest levels of traffic-generated air pollution ? about 32 parts per billion (ppb) and above ? were more likely to have autism than children living in areas estimated to have levels of 10 ppb and below.
A person living at least 500 meters from a freeway in Southern California would be exposed to air pollution levels one-half to one-third of the levels seen in the highest pollution group, Volk said.
Children exposed to air pollution levels between 10 and 32 ppb were not at increased risk of autism compared with children exposed to lower levels.
Exposure to high levels of particulate matter, or particles in the air, was also associated with an increased risk of autism. Such particles are small enough to be inhaled into the lungs, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
Volk noted that air-quality measures do not necessarily reflect the amount of traffic-generated air pollution on a local level, and so people living in areas with good air quality might still be at increased risk.
Potential for brain damage
If the link is real, exposure to air pollution is not likely to account for many cases of autism, said Dr. Andrew Adesman, chief of developmental and behavioral pediatrics at Steven & Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center of New York in New Hyde Park, N.Y., who noted that many children don't live within 1 to 3 miles of a major highway.
"As much as it would be perhaps attractive to find a single cause for autism, the reality is there are many different causes," including genetic factors, said Adesman, who was not involved in the study. Many lines of research are needed to investigate these causes, Adesman said.
It's not known how air pollution might increase autism risk, but previous studies suggest it's biologically plausible.
Particles called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that are present in diesel exhaust have been shown to affect brain function through interactions with genes, the researchers said. In addition, research suggests air pollution may trigger inflammation that impairs the the tissue layer separating the brain from its blood vessels.

LONDON (AP) ? Concerns that European finance ministers will again fail to reach an agreement on handing over more bailout cash to Greece weighed on markets Monday.
Most attention will focus on the finance ministers meeting in Brussels though election results in the Spanish region of Catalonia that saw separatists gain ground have also added to investor worries at the start of the week.
For weeks, the eurogroup of finance ministers have failed to agree a strategy that will allow them to release some ?44 billion ($56.8 billion) for the cash-strapped country.
The expectation is that Greece will get the money and an extra two years to make the reforms that are a condition of the bailout. But an extension would cost the eurozone several billion more and finding that money has lain at the heart of the current stalemate.
Several proposals to plug the financial gap have been proposed, including reducing the interest rate Greece pays on loans it is getting from euro partners and the International Monetary Fund. Time is short as Greece is running out of the money it needs to pay its day-to-day running costs.
"Clearly any decision by the eurogroup to kick the Greek issue further down the road will stand to unsettle markets globally," said Fawad Razaqzada, market strategist at GFT Markets.
In Europe, the FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was down 0.4 percent at 5,795 while Germany's DAX fell 0.2 percent to 7,291. The CAC-40 in France was 0.6 percent lower at 3,509.
The euro meanwhile lost some of its shine but remains near multiweek highs against the dollar. Europe's single currency was down 0.1 percent at $1.2964.
Wall Street was poised for a retreat at the open too. Dow futures and the broader S&P 500 futures were 0.5 percent lower.
The expected falls in the U.S. come despite signs that the crucial holiday shopping season has got off to a solid start.
Surveys showed that Americans visited stores and websites in record numbers last Friday, the day after the Thanksgiving holiday. That day is dubbed "Black Friday" because U.S. retailers traditionally turn a profit as millions of Americans rush out to stores in search of gifts for Christmas and other celebrations.
The surveys showed a record 247 million shoppers visited stores and websites between Thursday and Sunday, up 9.2 percent from the year before.
Earlier, Asian markets failed to make much headway, if any.
While Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 0.2 percent to 9,388.94, Hong Kong's Hang Seng was sapped of momentum by lethargic mainland Chinese markets, closing 0.3 percent lower at 21,857.77.
In China, the Shanghai Composite Index was down 0.5 percent to 2,017.46 while the smaller Shenzhen Composite Index lost 1.4 percent to 789.49.

Abel Collins: Campaigning on the Cheap: An Independent Path Forward
Following the elections, there are still no Independent/Third Party members of the House of Representatives. This is despite the abysmal approval rating Congress has had for well over a year, despite the feeling held by the majority of voters that the country is moving in the wrong direction, and despite the fact that a plurality of registered voters identify as independent. If there was a year for an Independent to break the duopoly, this was it, right?
I ran as an Independent in Rhode Island's 2nd District, and with 9.2 percent of the vote I earned the second best showing nationally of any Indy/3rd Party Congressional candidate running against both establishment parties. The highest total was Marcus Lewis in Illinois at 13.5 percent (running against incumbent criminal Jesse Jackson Jr). So, none of us got particularly close. A reasonable person might argue it's time to raise the white flag and let the Democrats and Republicans continue their ruinous policies of selling out the American people to Wall Street and Big Business.
I can't in good conscience let that happen, so let me explain why 2014 will be the year we see at least one Independent in the House.
Deeper than the election results, allow me to reveal a few more details about my race. I was 33 when I jumped into the race (my first) five months before election day on June 6. The campaign budget was nonexistent. The assets that I had going into the fray were the accumulated vacation time that I had built up for being a workaholic environmental organizer over the past two and half years at Sierra Club, the campaign organizing skills that I developed there and in my previous activism, and the invaluable network of forward thinking folks I had gotten to work with and know in the process.
I was young, but I was not naive. I knew that I was going to be outspent by orders of magnitude. My opponents were both millionaires backed by their respective party apparatchik. I set out to win, expecting it would take between $100,000-200,000 of fundraising and the endorsements of a few prominent progressive politicians and groups. I still believe that I would have won, if I had been able to secure those things. My theory was (and remains) that there is a viable low-cost campaign model, relying heavily on social media, a volunteer ground game, and a popular platform. The big question was if we had sufficient time.
I ended up raising about $25,000 in individual donations, which translated into spending about $1.25 for every vote I received. I didn't get the big endorsements, but we did generate great volunteer and social media efforts. We were efficient to a degree traditional candidates can only dream of.
As for building a popular platform, the establishment parties have made that easy as they have both drifted right of center when poll after poll shows Americans to the left on nearly every issue. The planks read like the grievances of Occupy and echo complaints heard over dinner tables all over the country; institute Wall Street reform and accountability, get money out of politics, bring jobs back by holding foreign industry to the same standards we hold our own with fair trade policies, create a real works program, get real about global warming, and scrap the insurance industry driven healthcare model for a single payer system. Both Democrats and Republicans are vulnerable on all these fronts.
Here's what it sounded like in our debate
My biggest miscalculation was in time. Five months was inadequate to get the name recognition and credibility necessary to draw in the endorsements and the subsequent fundraising needed to win. I believe now that it will require at least a year of active campaigning.
The whole race was filled with thousands of smaller lessons that will make the next run more effective. We will be ready earlier, and I will be a better candidate. Just as importantly, the opposition will continue to deteriorate. Gridlock will plague Congress again. Big banks and corporations will continue to reap record profits at the expense of the working class, and the growing existential threat of climate change will be ignored. Dems helpless to the siren song of Clintonian triangulation will continue to follow Republicans to the right and reward their base constituencies with lip service and crumbs.
And that, my fellow Americans, is why 2014 will see at least one Independent elected to the House of Representatives and hopefully more. Between now and then, I will be doing what I can to prepare the way for my own victory but also to share my low-cost campaign strategy with other independents. I can see the book title already, "Campaigning in America on less than $2 a Vote."

DENVER ? A man who worked as a society writer at the Rocky Mountain News died Thursday.
Thomas Hardy was at Denver Health Medical Center undergoing treatment for smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning from a fire at his home in the 300 block of Downing St.
Hardy was 68-years-old.
Firefighters pulled him out of the burning house in the Country Club neighborhood early Tuesday and paramedics rushed him to the hospital.
His two dogs died in the fire.
Hardy wrote about Denver?s cultural events and the movers and shakers in the society circles during the 1980s. He also did fund raising and consulting work for various nonprofit organizations.

Scientists See Advances in Deep Learning, a Part of Artificial Intelligence

Using an artificial intelligence technique inspired by theories about how the brain recognizes patterns, technology companies are reporting startling gains in fields as diverse as computer vision, speech recognition and the identification of promising new molecules for designing drugs.
The advances have led to widespread enthusiasm among researchers who design software to perform human activities like seeing, listening and thinking. They offer the promise of machines that converse with humans and perform tasks like driving cars and working in factories, raising the specter of automated robots that could replace human workers.
The technology, called deep learning, has already been put to use in services like Apple?s Siri virtual personal assistant, which is based on Nuance Communications? speech recognition service, and in Google?s Street View, which uses machine vision to identify specific addresses.
But what is new in recent months is the growing speed and accuracy of deep-learning programs, often called artificial neural networks or just ?neural nets? for their resemblance to the neural connections in the brain.
?There has been a number of stunning new results with deep-learning methods,? said Yann LeCun, a computer scientist at New York University who did pioneering research in handwriting recognition at Bell Laboratories. ?The kind of jump we are seeing in the accuracy of these systems is very rare indeed.?
Artificial intelligence researchers are acutely aware of the dangers of being overly optimistic. Their field has long been plagued by outbursts of misplaced enthusiasm followed by equally striking declines.
In the 1960s, some computer scientists believed that a workable artificial intelligence system was just 10 years away. In the 1980s, a wave of commercial start-ups collapsed, leading to what some people called the ?A.I. winter.?
But recent achievements have impressed a wide spectrum of computer experts. In October, for example, a team of graduate students studying with the University of Toronto computer scientist Geoffrey E. Hinton won the top prize in a contest sponsored by Merck to design software to help find molecules that might lead to new drugs.
From a data set describing the chemical structure of 15 different molecules, they used deep-learning software to determine which molecule was most likely to be an effective drug agent.
The achievement was particularly impressive because the team decided to enter the contest at the last minute and designed its software with no specific knowledge about how the molecules bind to their targets. The students were also working with a relatively small set of data; neural nets typically perform well only with very large ones.
?This is a really breathtaking result because it is the first time that deep learning won, and more significantly it won on a data set that it wouldn?t have been expected to win at,? said Anthony Goldbloom, chief executive and founder of Kaggle, a company that organizes data science competitions, including the Merck contest.
Advances in pattern recognition hold implications not just for drug development but for an array of applications, including marketing and law enforcement. With greater accuracy, for example, marketers can comb large databases of consumer behavior to get more precise information on buying habits. And improvements in facial recognition are likely to make surveillance technology cheaper and more commonplace.
Artificial neural networks, an idea going back to the 1950s, seek to mimic the way the brain absorbs information and learns from it. In recent decades, Dr. Hinton, 64 (a great-great-grandson of the 19th-century mathematician George Boole, whose work in logic is the foundation for modern digital computers), has pioneered powerful new techniques for helping the artificial networks recognize patterns.
Modern artificial neural networks are composed of an array of software components, divided into inputs, hidden layers and outputs. The arrays can be ?trained? by repeated exposures to recognize patterns like images or sounds.
These techniques, aided by the growing speed and power of modern computers, have led to rapid improvements in speech recognition, drug discovery and computer vision.
Deep-learning systems have recently outperformed humans in certain limited recognition tests.
Last year, for example, a program created by scientists at the Swiss A.?I. Lab at the University of Lugano won a pattern recognition contest by outperforming both competing software systems and a human expert in identifying images in a database of German traffic signs.
The winning program accurately identified 99.46 percent of the images in a set of 50,000; the top score in a group of 32 human participants was 99.22 percent, and the average for the humans was 98.84 percent.
