Gillmor Gang: Platformicide

Gillmor Gang test patternThe Gillmor Gang ? John Borthwick, Robert Scoble, Kevin Marks, Keith Teare, and Steve Gillmor ? watched in amazement as Twitter made good on its promise to hobble the core of its viral power adopter developers and users. By shutting down third-party clients to focus monetization on its core clients and the Web, Twitter leaves itself exposed to its challengers for control of the realtime wave. To some of the Gang, Apple's move to eject Google Maps in favor of its own immature product seems similarly motivated and fated to bad results. But Twitter has historically made these kinds of protective overreaching moves in order to protect the fledgling company from being overrun by more powerful competitors. This time it's different, as Twitter releases services designed to capitalize on the innovations of its ecosystem. The real calculation is whether the openings provided to Google+ and, to a lesser extent, Facebook can be leveraged before innovation dries up in the Twitter pipeline. A high-stakes game of Chicken.

Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) is no ordinary archeologist. When we first see him, he is somewhere in the Peruvian jungle in 1936, running a booby-trapped gauntlet (complete with an over-sized rolling boulder) to fetch a solid-gold idol. He loses this artifact to his chief rival, a French archeologist named Belloq (Paul Freeman), who then prepares to kill our hero. In the first of many serial-like escapes, Indy eludes Belloq by hopping into a convenient plane. So, then: is Indiana Jones afraid of anything? Yes, snakes. The next time we see Jones, he's a soft-spoken, bespectacled professor. He is then summoned from his ivy-covered environs by Marcus Brody (Denholm Elliott) to find the long-lost Ark of the Covenant. The Nazis, it seems, are already searching for the Ark, which the mystical-minded Hitler hopes to use to make his stormtroopers invincible. But to find the Ark, Indy must first secure a medallion kept under the protection of Indy's old friend Abner Ravenwood, whose daughter, Marion (Karen Allen), evidently has a "history" with Jones. Whatever their personal differences, Indy and Marion become partners in one action-packed adventure after another, ranging from wandering the snake pits of the Well of Souls to surviving the pyrotechnic unearthing of the sacred Ark. A joint project of Hollywood prodigies George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, with a script co-written by Lawrence Kasdan and Philip Kaufman, among others, Raiders of the Lost Ark is not so much a movie as a 115-minute thrill ride. Costing 22 million dollars (nearly three times the original estimate), Raiders of the Lost Ark reaped 200 million dollars during its first run. It was followed by Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1985) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), as well as a short-lived TV-series "prequel." ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Did the butler do it? A Q&A on the Vatican trial

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? The Vatican has never seen anything like it.

Pope Benedict XVI's trusted butler, who dressed the pontiff each morning, attended his daily Mass and helped serve him his meals, stands accused of stealing the pope's private correspondence and giving it to a journalist who wrote a blockbuster book about the secrets of one of the most secretive institutions in the world.

Paolo Gabriele, a 46-year-old father of three, goes on trial Saturday in the most sensational crime committed on Vatican territory since the 1998 double murder of the Swiss Guard commander and his wife. That case never came to trial because the suspect killed himself.

Gabriele, who was replaced after the scandal broke in May, is scheduled to face the three-judge Vatican tribunal, charged with aggravated theft and facing up to four years in prison if convicted. He has already confessed and asked to be pardoned by the pope ? something most Vatican watchers say is a given if he is convicted.

WHAT PAPERS WERE STOLEN?

According to prosecutors, Gabriele had an "enormous" stash of papal documents at his Vatican City apartment. After his May 24 arrest, he admitted he photocopied documents and gave them to Italian journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi, whose "His Holiness: The secret papers of Pope Benedict XVI" was published in May. The most damaging letter reproduced in the book was written by the former No. 2 Vatican administrator to the pope, in which he begged not to be transferred as punishment for exposing alleged corruption. The prelate, Monsignor Carlo Maria Vigano, is now the Vatican's U.S. ambassador.

WHY WAS IT LEAKED?

Nuzzi has said his source, code-named "Maria" in the book, wanted to shed light on the secrets of the church that were damaging it. Taken as a whole, the documents seemed aimed at discrediting Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican secretary of state and Benedict's longtime trusted deputy. Bertone, 77, a canon lawyer and soccer enthusiast, has frequently been criticized for perceived shortcomings in running the Vatican.

DID THE BUTLER DO IT?

Prosecutors quoted Gabriele as saying he knew taking the documents was wrong, but that he felt the Holy Spirit was inspiring him to shed light on the problems he saw around him. "Seeing evil and corruption everywhere in the church ... I was sure that a shock, even a media one, would have been healthy to bring the Church back on the right track," Gabriele was quoted by prosecutors as saying during a June 5 interrogation. They quoted him as saying he never intended to hurt the church or Benedict.

IF HE CONFESSED, WHY BOTHER WITH A TRIAL?

In the U.S. legal system, a case such as this might result in a plea bargain. But the Vatican legal system doesn't provide for plea bargains, according to Giovanni Giacobbe, the prosecutor in the Vatican appeals court. He noted that confessions can be coerced or given up to protect someone else. Gabriele's confession must be corroborated by other evidence uncovered during the investigation in order for him to be convicted, he said. A co-defendant, Vatican computer expert Claudio Sciarpelletti, is charged with aiding and abetting Gabriele.

HOW DOES A VATICAN TRIAL WORK?

The hearing opens Saturday at 9:30 a.m. No oaths are taken ? as the Vatican legal system, like the Italian one on which it is based, assumes a suspect may lie for self-protection. The hearing is declared open and one of the judges reads the charges aloud against Gabriele. He doesn't enter a plea. The defense can make objections to the indictment. Both sides may enter their witness lists. Eventually, the presiding judge ? Giuseppe Dalla Torre, president of the Vatican City State tribunal ? questions Gabriele. Unlike the U.S. system, prosecutors don't question suspects directly and there is no cross-examination; the judge conducts the interrogations on behalf of both sides. Eventually, after all witnesses are heard, objections dealt with and evidence examined, the judges convene in their chambers and issue a ruling.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?

There has never been a trial like this before in the Vatican tribunal, so there's no way to know how long it will take. Much depends on what, if any, objections are raised and how many witnesses are called. Hearings are usually only held on Saturdays, since the judges on the Vatican tribunal hold full-time jobs elsewhere.

WHAT'S THE TRIBUNAL LIKE?

The trial takes place in the small, austere courtroom inside a four-story, peach-colored palazzo inside Vatican City. A plaque near the entrance reads "Judicial Offices" and a carved stone papal seal frames the doorway. A metal detector greets visitors. The courtroom features rich wood paneling and gilded molding on the ceiling, and a small crucifix is centered behind the chairs of the three lay judges. Gabriele, assuming he attends, can sit at one of the tables facing the judges with his lawyer. The prosecutor has his own place at the other table. There is a small section for the public.

WHO CAN ATTEND A VATICAN TRIAL?

On paper, Vatican court proceedings are open to the public. But Giacobbe said those wishing to attend must petition the court, which then decides whether to grant permission. Gabriele, who was granted house arrest in July after spending nearly two months in a Vatican police unit, doesn't have to attend. For the media, eight journalists attend each session and report back to the Vatican press corps. No television, still cameras or audio recording is allowed and court transcripts aren't public.

HOW HAS THE POPE AND THE VATICAN REACTED?

The Vatican took the betrayal very seriously: Benedict appointed a commission of three cardinals to investigate alongside Vatican magistrates; they delivered their confidential report to the pope over the summer. Benedict addressed the scandal for the first time a week after Gabriele was arrested, saying "The events of recent days about the Curia and my collaborators have brought sadness in my heart." But in a nod to his confidence in Bertone, he added: "I want to renew my trust in and encouragement of my closest collaborators and all those who every day, with loyalty and a spirit of sacrifice and in silence, help me fulfill my ministry."

Asian markets cheer Spain's plans for reform

Asian stocks edge up as debt-laden Spain unveils budget plans with sharp cuts in government spending. Euro and Japanese yen climb while dollar falls.

Asian shares rose on Friday on hope economic reform and budget plans unveiled by Spain will help the debt-saddled nation manage its debt imbalances, in a move seen as an effort to preempt the likely conditions of international assistance.

Global stocks, the euro and commodities rose while the dollar fell on Thursday after Spain announced a detailed timetable for economic reform and a budget based mostly on sharp spending cuts rather than tax hikes.

Madrid is talking to European Union authorities about the terms of a possible aid package, which would pave the way for initiating the European Central Bank's bond-buying programme aimed at easing the country's borrowing strains.

The MSCI index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was up 0.2 percent, after jumping on Thursday on a spike in Chinese shares as speculation for stimulus spread. Australian shares were nearly flat and South Korean stocks rose 0.5 percent.

Japan's Nikkei stock average opened up 0.4 percent after touching a two-week low the day before.

The euro traded at $1.2912, recovering from a two-week low of $1.2828 touched on Thursday.

The yen hit its highest in nearly two weeks against the dollar of 77.56 yen earlier on Friday, after the dollar index measured against a basket of currencies fell 0.4 percent on Thursday for its biggest daily drop in two weeks.

"Risk is primed for a comeback, and the AUD (Australian dollar) may be the biggest beneficiary," Neal Gilbert, currency strategist at GFT Forex in New Jersey, in a note.

"If Asia is as satisfied with the Spanish Budget Plan as the rest of the world, a run back up to resistance from last week at 1.0520 may be in order," he said, referring to the Australian dollar. The Aussie, widely seen as a gauge for investor risk appetite, steadied at $1.0434 on Friday.

Asian credit markets were firmer early on Friday, with the spread on the iTraxx Asia ex-Japan investment-grade index narrowing by two basis points.

Barclays Capital analysts noted that despite bad news, the losses in Spanish assets over the past two months were limited.

"This supports our view that the backstops in place will likely be effective in curtailing tail risks," they said.

Ten-year Spanish bond yields dipped below 6 percent on Thursday after topping that level on Wednesday for the first time since the ECB unveiled the bond-buying plan on Sept. 6.

Spain faces a Moody's credit rating review this week and the release of a stress test of its banking sector on Friday which will reveal how much more money is needed to recapitalise its banks.

Ratings agency Egan-Jones on Thursday cut Spain's sovereign rating further into junk status, citing the country's faltering banks and struggling regional governments.

CHINA MOVE EYED

Reflecting choppy market sentiment, the CBOE Volatility index which measures volatility expected in the Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 11.7 percent on Thursday for its sharpest daily decline in three weeks, just a day after the index posted its biggest daily rise in 2-1/2 weeks.

Talk authorities would offer measures to prop up the wobbly Chinese stock markets lifted the Shanghai Composite Index up as much as 3 percent on Thursday, one day after the index hit its lowest point since February 2009.

Sentiment was also buoyed by China's central bank injecting a record amount of liquidity into the money markets this week to ease funding strains as China heads for a week-long holiday.

Following fresh monetary stimulus unveiled by the United States and Japan this month, markets have also retained expectations for China to cut interest rates to spur growth, as weakening demand in China has damaged global economies and weighed on investor sentiment.

Beijing approved billions of dollars worth of infrastructure projects this month.

But China's biggest listed steelmaker, Baoshan Iron & Steel Co, which has suspended output at a loss-making plant, expressed doubt that attempts to prop up the slowing economy would revive demand in the world's biggest market for the metal. A slump in iron ore prices had triggered a broad sell-off in riskier assets.

U.S. crude rose 0.4 percent to $92.23 a barrel and Brent also rose 0.4 percent to $112.43.

GNOME 3.6 arrives with new notifications and improved accessibility support

GNOME 36 launchesThe third update to the third version of Gnome may send numerologists to their calendars, but we're not that way inclined. Instead, the latest bump to the software adds a new Boxes application, a new notification system and an activities overview. It's also chucking in improved accessibility support in addition to the usual raft of tweaks and bug fixes you'd expect from an update like this. It'll be available from your own vendor (or distribution) soon, or you can pick up a live image from the official site straight away.

When humanity
Is trapped in darkness
Only the bravest
Will let hope be their guide
To seek out
The light

August 8, 2072
Dear Journal,

My father's father used to say that the buildings shined with light, that people didn?t have to be afraid of their neighbors because there was some sort of order to things. The buildings still remain; their power is just long gone. We grew up in this world, a world that forged us into who we are, living under the empty shells that our ancestors created. He said that these metal structures that now only hold dozens, used to hold thousands due to dwindling population. Some of us still hope though, hope that we can return to a day when women don?t have to fear for their children, and we don't have to sell our freedom to anyone willing to offer us protection from the elements. Almost everyone has lost hope, but there are rumors. Rumors of a city with that power again, a city that has discovered the secrets of the past. That's why they took them. My family. Because they knew too much. I?m going to it, I?m going to try and reach it. I have others with me who dream of sharing that power for the world. I've managed to gather them all here now. We each have our own reasons for reaching the city, but we all have the same need to get there. The same ambition to see it with our own eyes. The leaders don?t want that though, the ones who think there better than all the rest. The Militia. They see the idea of a return of this power as them losing their own. The last thing they want us to do is hope, and that?s all we can do. Hope, and survive. So they've sent hunters after us. But I have to go now. The longer I wait, the longer they have my family.

Wish me luck journal,
Evangeline LeBeau

The Blackout:
The world used to be a very different place. Humanity was once strong. The hunters. Not the hunted. The world was theirs to conquer with enormous destroying machines, paving their way through the wilderness. But above all, their world was light with something called electricity.

But now we are weak. We cower in fear of the wilderness we once so boldly conquered, hiding in the empty skeletons of buildings that once held thousands, cities that once held millions. We sell our very freedom to the highest bidder. What are we bidding on? Protection. Nowadays, we?re willing to give up what we used to call rights, in order to feel safe.

So what happened to us? How could a civilization that was once so powerful, simply crumble?

The answer is surprisingly easy. We grew too confident. Too dependent on our technology and too secure in our place at the top of the food chain. So, when someone threatened to take that away? We didn?t quite know how to respond, but with laughter. After all, who could possibly just shut off the world like a light switch?

So we ignored the threat.

And when the world turned off on August 3rd 2013, chaos was unleashed. Everything stopped. Engines, electricity, batteries. Every modern advancement we?d ever made? Just flipped off, never to turn on again.

And no matter how hard the world?s greatest minds worked for years and years, no one succeeded in turning our precious technology back on. The rest is as follows: We crumbled and five years of complete chaos followed, destroying, not only the world?s advancements in technology, but in government as well. The resulting riots were unstoppable, and this time is now known as The Panic.

When things finally started to settle down, the world?s population had been cut in half. Most of us had never even set foot in the wilderness before, and could hardly live without elevators, let alone cars. Survival of the Fittest took place, and the weakest were slowly killed off. We were scared, cowering.

And out of our fear, rose The Militia. Some rumor that they were the ones that turned off the power, for they now hold it. They are the ultimate dictators, run by a sibling pair. The Militia is strict, enforcing rough laws on the people, pushing them around the way they want, not above torture, the word ?inhumane? practically flew out the window for them.

So why do we let them do this to us? Surely there are more of us than them, right? The answer to that is simple.

We?re afraid. Afraid of chaos, afraid of the elements, and afraid of each other. Without the Militia, who?s to stop our own neighbors from killing us for a meal? Who?s to make sure everyone?s fed? Who?s to keep the creepy creatures of the night in the forests where they belong?

But there is hope. In the form of rumors. Rumors of a city with the light again. Rumors that the Militia will do anything to stop from spreading.

So. The question is: Are you brave enough to set out in search of this city, with nothing but hope guiding you, and fear hunting you?

The Plot:

New Haven is the seat of power for the Militia, the center of their control. It?s also where the largest population is and where almost all goods have to go through, the Militia likes to be able to keep a firm hand on everything. In recent years the Militia has become all the more brutal, killing people in the streets for violations as simple as looking at them wrong. Rapes have risen and the Militias? soldiers take whatever they want without paying, any who try to stop them end up dead or in the Pit.

The rumors of a city with power, nicknamed Utopia, has caused some people to hope for a change. Hope for a time when the Militia won?t be in control, this led to the largest crackdown that New Haven has ever known, it would later be called the Purge. Dozens of random people were gathered together and killed, their only crime being that they lived in the city. The Militia leaders made it clear that anyone who spoke of Utopia or change would suffer a fate worse than death; they would be forced into slavery in the Pit. An inescapable prison-mine that the Militia lowers convicts into. There is no way out and they only get food in exchange for the minerals that they mine. One woman had a dream though, a dream of reaching Utopia and as such she and her two sisters planned out their trip, planned a way to get out of New Haven and find this place, and they happened to be equipped with something more precious than gold. A map to Utopia. It?s rough, old, may not be accurate, and was drawn out by a grandfather the Militia declared insane, but it?s the best shot they have.

In the dead of night though the girls? sister was taken and thrown into a place worse than the dreaded Pits, from which there had never been a survivor. The personal prison of the Militia. Spots in this place were reserved for only the worst of traitors, people whom the Militia hated, but needed for information. In anger the sisters went and gathered together a handful of people, people who would help them get help for their sister and free the city from the Militia. One of the first ones that they invited in was a smuggler, a man who had more than a little history of getting past the Militia, a pair of teenagers who wanted to leave the city, and a woman who had lost both her parents during the Purge. More people came though, people who had lost friends and family to the Milita, some even who came for their own reasons. One was even ex Militia, leaving when he became sick of the way things were, a thief on the run with her only chance of escape being Utopia. They might not have been the best of friends, some didn?t even know each other before it all began and some even had issues with one another but there was one thing that they had in common. They need Utopia to exist.

The Setting:

The setting is simple - Its a post-apocalyptic dystopian society ran by a single force that call themselves The Militia. They control everything. There is no electricity. Perhaps there is in the Utopia that our heroes seek. Perhaps not. The world looks like a 24/7 Renaissance Festival; Yes, it's as if the Dark Ages have risen again. As far as weapons, there are guns. But they are scarce and illegal. The penalty for being caught with any is death. Transportation? Try horse and oxen with a cart. Wagons. Anything that isn't run on electricity. Bye-bye smart cars! HBT: Astros to name Bo Porter manager

Bo Porter has been a popular name on the managing carousel for a few years now, and it was no surprise to learn the Astros would give him serious consideration for their vacancy. According to FOXSports.com?s Jon Morosi and Ken Rosenthal, he?ll be Houston?s next manager.

Porter, who was previously a finalist for jobs in Florida and Pittsburgh, is currently serving as the Nationals? third base coach.

A 40th-round pick out of the University of Iowa in 1993, Porter fought long and hard to reach the majors in 1999. He never could establish himself there ? he ended up hitting .214 with two homers in 126 at-bats over three seasons ? but there?s no denying he made the most of his talent. After retiring in 2003, he started coaching in the minors in 2005. He reached the majors as the Marlins? third-base coach just two years later.

By taking the Houston job now, Porter passed on the possibility that a more attractive opportunity might present itself later. But on the plus side, he won?t face any pressure to win right away. The Astros are bringing in plenty of smart people, but it?s going to be a long time before they?re in any sort of position to contend in the AL West.

U.S. Secretary of Labor Visits BMCC ? CUNY Newswire ? CUNY

September 26, 2012 | Borough of Manhattan Community College

U.S. Department of Labor Secretary Hilda L. Solis visited BMCC on Monday, observing a Health Information Technology computer lab in the campus?s main building at 199 Chambers, and holding a press conference in Fiterman Hall.

The backdrop for Secretary Solis?s remarks was Fiterman Hall?s sweeping overlook of the gleaming, partially built World Trade Center?a fitting symbol for the economic revitalization she referenced as she congratulated BMCC for having received a $3 million health services training grant through the Labor Department?s Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training Program.

The Department of Labor released $500 million in grants to community colleges and universities across the country, and BMCC received the largest grant of its kind in Downstate New York.

The Secretary of Labor goes to class
Secretary Solis?s visit began in a Health Information Technology computer lab on BMCC?s main campus. She shared with students that she is the daughter of immigrant parents, the first in her family to attend college.

?President Obama is so excited about community colleges,? she said. ?He?d be pleased to see your faces?and be proud.?

Students listened raptly from their computer terminals. ?I like this proposal and I?m glad it?s coming to the college,? said HIT major Anissa Phillip. ?I wanted to go into the health information field, but I was told I needed to have a bachelor?s degree. Now, with this program you can start from the lower level and work your way up.?

Credentials students earn through the newly funded program will be ?stackable,? Secretary Solis explained, and lead to a one-year certificate as a Health Informatics Specialist. In addition, she said, ?the coursework and internship credits will all count toward an associate degree if students choose to continue their education.?

In other words, said John Montanez, BMCC?s Dean for Grants and Development, the 36-month project ?will allow the college to align its non-credit health care programs to serve as feeders for its one-year certificate program in Health Informatics Technology.?

He added that it will allow BMCC to create career paths for dislocated workers, ?while meeting the critical shortage of skilled labor in the health care industry.?

?Tickets to employment?
?With this grant,? said Secretary Solis, ?BMCC will develop cutting-edge certificate programs to train medical assistant specialists, medical billing and coding specialists, and specialists in electronic health records and health informatics.?

Students will complete the program, she said, ?with industry-recognized credentials, or as I like to call them, ?tickets to employment?.?

They will also build valuable skills through internships will be provided by the project?s training partners.

?BMCC has put together a great coalition,? said Secretary Solis, one that is comprised of employers, members of the public workforce system, and others including the NYC Veterans Administration, New York University Langone Medical Center, and Upper Manhattan Workforce 1 Career Center.

A recession-proof career path
?This field?health care?is recession proof, and keeps growing,? said Secretary Solis. ?Everything is going to be computerized, and programs such as this one are the most cost-efficient way to get credentials.?

The program will serve approximately 450 individuals from groups disproportionately impacted by the recession?U.S. military veterans, immigrants, the elderly, the physically disabled, and other individuals determined to upgrade their employability and skill sets.

?Heath care remains the country?s fastest growing sector,? said Dean of Continuing Education Sunil Gupta, ?with 3.2 million jobs projected in the next six years.?

The electronic health records industry alone, he said, ?is short 51,000 workers, and over 200,000 new jobs will be created over the next five years through the Obama Administration?s Healthcare Reform Act. We want our students to be poised to take full advantage of these trends?and not just find jobs, but start careers.?

A modern model in workforce development
New Yorkers are ?resilient,? said Secretary Solis. ?They?ll go back to school if the program is affordable and they have the confidence it will lead to a job once they graduate.?

Those jobs are often ?middle-skill? jobs, she said, and ?require more than a high school diploma, but less than a four-year college degree. They are jobs that pay wages you can raise a family on. Actually, they?re more than just jobs. They?re pathways to better-paying careers.?

The Department of Labor is implementing and administering the program in coordination with the Department of Education.

?It?s the modern model in workforce development,? said Dean Gupta, ?not just training, but training and education. Students will be able to carry credits earned into degree programs and throughout their career. We are extremely grateful to the Department of Labor for giving us this opportunity to serve individuals in New York City looking for employment in fields that will provide a fair living wage.?

Keeping dreams alive
BMCC President Antonio P?rez welcomed Secretary Solis and her staff and accompanied them on their classroom visit and tour of Fiterman Hall.

He thanked the Secretary for ?inviting BMCC to join with the U.S. Department of Labor in creating something of great importance to America?jobs, jobs and more jobs.?

At the close of the event, President P?rez presented the Secretary with an historic artifact, a commemorative bolt removed from the original Fiterman Hall which was destroyed when World Trade 7 fell against it on 9/11. That building was razed in 2009 and rebuilt, opening for its first semester of students in August, 2012.

?This nut and bolt once held together Fiterman Hall, the BMCC building destroyed by the attacks of 9/11,? he read from the inscription on the Plexiglas-encased bolt. ?Thanks for keeping alive the dreams of our students.?

Challenge: Why Are the Coasts So Different? [Search Research]

Challenge: Why Are the Coasts So Different?Daniel Russell knows how to find the answers to questions you can't get to with a simple Google query. In his weekly Search Research column, Russell issues a search challenge, then follows up later in the week with his solution?using whatever search technology and methodology fits the bill. This week's challenge: why are the East Coast and West Coast so different?

The other day I was standing in a friend's office at the Googleplex. On his wall he had a large, very high-res map of North America. Interestingly, it was black and white, which makes your eye see the landforms in a very different way.

As I stood there looking at it, I noticed something I'd never seen before: the East Coast and the West Coast of the US are very different... Yes, I know they're very different culturally (LA vs. NY; TMZ vs. NPR; etc.). But what I saw for the first time was how topographically different the coasts are from each other. That surprised me.

Here are a few side-by-side images from Google Earth to give you a sense of what I mean. I've taken 3 overview shots at different resolutions so you can see what I mean. (Remember that you can click on the images to see them at full size.)

Challenge: Why Are the Coasts So Different?

Here's an overview of both coasts. What I saw was that the East Coast has LOTS more islands and barrier reefs than the West Coast. That struck me as being really, really different.

Here's a closer in view:

Challenge: Why Are the Coasts So Different?

Do you see what I see? There are lots and lots of very low-lying islands in the east than in the west. (Note that I didn't try to cherrypick really good locations?these samples are from the same latitude on the West Coast and the East Coast and are pretty representative of the topography.

Finally, here's a real closeup of two locations West vs. East. Now the difference is really clear.

Challenge: Why Are the Coasts So Different?

And now for the challenge: Why? <b?

Or, to be more precise: Why is the East Coast topography dominated by low-lying fringe islands, while the West Coast of the US is mostly without islands? (To be sure, there are a few, but they're pretty jaggy and stoney, while the East Coast islands are mostly sandy and flat.)

Can you figure out why?

As usual, please let us know what path you followed to find an answer, and about how long it took you to do so!

Search on!

Politician kept budget vow, now tries to keep job

Shortly after the newly elected Benishek arrived in Washington, staffers raised a banner in his Capitol Hill suite that proclaimed: "If you are here to ask for more money, you're in the wrong office!" The message was fitting for a tea party favorite who had railed against federal spending and a ?nanny-state mentality? during the 2010 campaign that led to Republican takeover of the House. (AP) ? Shortly after newly elected Rep. Dan Benishek arrived in Washington, staffers raised a banner that proclaimed to visitors in his Capitol Hill suite: "If you are here to ask for more money, you're in the wrong office!"

The message was fitting for a tea party favorite who had railed against federal spending and a "nanny-state mentality" during the 2010 campaign that led to a Republican takeover of the House. But it was something new for his constituents in northern Michigan, a largely rural area where a spirit of self-reliance coexists with the reality that government ? popular or not ? is a crucial economic player.

For decades, Michigan's 1st Congressional District elected representatives who sided with conservatives on social issues like abortion while energetically seeking federal dollars for local projects ? most recently Bart Stupak, a Democrat who retired after nine terms.

But Benishek aimed to fully embrace the conservative ideal. And now after two years in office, he finds himself in an unusual predicament, a politician taking heat for staying true to his campaign rhetoric rather than failing to do so. Whether he wins a second term will offer clues about how well the less-government-is-better philosophy actually plays out in the countryside and small towns where the staunchly conservative movement has flourished.

He isn't the only tea party freshman caught between the cut-government philosophy and the expectations of constituents. First-term Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle is in a close rematch with Democrat Dan Maffei in western New York. Republican Reps. Bobby Schilling of Illinois and Allen West in Florida are also fighting for their seats.

Benishek, a political newcomer and plainspoken surgeon from Michigan's Upper Peninsula town of Crystal Falls, has experienced a sometimes rocky first term punctuated by awkward meetings with constituents, conflicting attitudes and strained attempts to find common ground between the sharp edges of ideology and the practical demands of public service.

He created hard feelings by voting to phase out federal subsidies for airlines serving small airports, even though they benefited six airports in his territory. He jolted local development officials by refusing to support continuing a federal scholarship program for student-athletes at an Olympic training center that began in the 1990s.

Some local leaders grumbled that he showed little interest in them or in tackling problems that weren't on the tea party's national agenda.

"They are sick of Benishek," Larry Inman, a Grand Traverse County commissioner, told the Traverse City Record-Eagle in January after being recruited to challenge Benishek in the next primary election. Shortly afterward, the two made peace. And the freshman politician has raised his profile in the district, but the complaints may have taken a toll.

He won by a double-digit margin two years ago. But his rematch with former Democratic state legislator Gary McDowell is considered among the tightest House races. State and national organizations are pumping money into the contest.

"We're very excited about prospects of beating Dan Benishek," Michigan Democratic Chairman Mark Brewer said.

Benishek, 60, acknowledges his first term has been a learning process. But he says he's done more on local issues than many realize, including sponsoring a measure that will boost logging of national forests in his territory. He's toured the district for gatherings dubbed "house calls with Dr. Dan."

People back home want their share of federal money but also want the federal deficit brought under control, he says.

"Northern Michigan elected me to reduce federal spending and ensure that our children and grandchildren have the same opportunity for the American dream that we had growing up," he said. He added that House Republicans are "trying to make some reasonable cuts in the budget and still maintain the services that we depend on."

Michigan's 1st district, one of the largest east of the Mississippi River, is a sprawling expanse of forests, farms and villages framed by three of the Great Lakes ? Superior, Michigan and Huron. Its biggest city, Marquette, has just 21,000 residents.

Harsh winters and vast distances nurture a sense of independence and suspicion of big government, especially in the remote Upper Peninsula, where many feel so alienated from the state capital of Lansing that half-serious proposals to secede from Michigan occasionally pop up. Yet public institutions are economic pillars in the region, from the U.P.'s three state universities to national parks that support tourism.

Census data for the years 2006-2010 show about 16 percent of the district's workers ? and 21 percent in the Upper Peninsula ? had government jobs, compared to 10 percent statewide. Nearly 40 percent of the district's residents have publicly funded health care, largely because the population is disproportionately elderly.

Benishek's two immediate predecessors, Stupak and Republican Bob Davis, embodied the "all politics is local" adage. Davis helped win approval of a national park celebrating the region's mining heritage. That has drawn visitors to the remote Keweenaw Peninsula that has struggled since copper mining faded in the last century. Stupak sought funding for a Coast Guard icebreaking vessel, for upgraded navigational locks at Sault Ste. Marie and for the Olympic scholarships named for his deceased son, along with other projects.

"People up there aren't looking for a free ride, but they do expect government to lend a helping hand," said Stupak, now an attorney in Washington. "If you're a community of maybe 3,000 people and the EPA says you need a new sewer system because the pipes are broken and there's danger of E. coli, how are you going to afford that without federal help?"

Benishek's anti-government message resonated during his 2010 campaign, especially at tea party rallies, where Stupak was reviled for his key role in winning enactment of President Barack Obama's health care plan. But after Benishek took office, not all welcomed the contrast with his predecessor.

Amy Clickner, CEO of the Lake Superior Community Partnership, which promotes development in Marquette County, was taken aback when Benishek refused to push for continued funding of the Olympic athletes scholarship program, saying it was an example of the much-criticized lawmaker "earmarks" for pet projects.

"We wrote letters, talked to him," said Clickner, "but he was very strong in his beliefs on that."

Benishek told The Associated Press recently he supports the scholarships and is looking for other ways to fund them.

His 2011 vote against the rural airports subsidy prompted protests from communities in his district. And he said afterward he would try to find a way to continue them. This year, he voted against a proposal by a fellow tea party conservative to slash the program.

McDowell, his Democratic opponent, said Benishek was only trying to avoid political damage.

"He's putting a rigid ideology ahead of what's right for northern Michigan," McDowell said.

Duane Duray, manager of the Gogebic-Iron County Airport, which relies on the subsidies, said he thinks Benishek is learning some political lessons the hard way.

"'He hit the ground ready to change the world," said Duray. "Well, you find out pretty quickly that you're not there to change the world, you're there to help the U.P."

But tea party activist Bob Lamb of Alpena said many in northern Michigan still want Benishek to break the old model, even if it causes some hurt feelings.

"I think they'd just as soon see the strings cut and do their own thing," he said.
