Montenegro Attracts More Tourists in 2012 :: Balkan Insight

Over the first seven months in 2012, Montenegro was visited by 4.6 per cent more people than in the same period in the previous year, while overnight stays were up by 6.1 per cent, the Ministry for Sustainable Development and Tourism said.

?In 2011, the revenues from tourism were 671 million euro. Our estimates are that this year they will be 3 per cent larger,? the Ministry added.

In July, the peak of the tourist season, Montenegro had 2.7 per cent more guests than in the same month last year, Montenegro's Statistical Office stated on Tuesday.

The most numerous guests were from Serbia, which suppled over a third of them. Russia came next, on around 20 per cent.

The month of June saw the biggest leap in numbers compared to last year. That month, visitor numbers were up by 13 per cent on 2011.

Apart from Serbia and Russia, many guests came from other neighbouring countries, such as Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and Macedonia.

The southernmost town of Ulcinj, close to Albania, holds the seasonal record. The number of visitors last Friday was three times larger than in the same day last year.

At the beginning of the year, the World Travel and Tourism Council predicted that Montenegro will be one of the world's fastest growing travel and tourism destinations.

Sudan rebels call for aid through S. Sudan, Ethiopia

Rebels in Sudan's war-torn South Kordofan and Blue Nile states, where hundreds of thousands of people have been affected by fighting, called Wednesday for aid to be sent in through South Sudan and Ethiopia.

The request -- which the rebels said they will formally make next week -- comes as an international aid plan falls behind schedule despite warnings about the humanitarian situation in the two states along Sudan's southern border.

"We will ask for the cross-border operation from South Sudan and Ethiopia," Arnu Ngutulu Lodi, spokesman for the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), told AFP.

He said the Sudanese government "is not respecting" a memorandum of understanding signed on August 5.

A ruling party official in Khartoum, however, insisted the government is committed to providing humanitarian assistance to all those affected by the war.

Both the government and rebels signed similar memorandums with the African Union, Arab League and UN to allow for humanitarian access throughout South Kordofan and Blue Nile -- including in rebel-held areas.

The signing came six months after the three organisations submitted their proposal to Khartoum.

The UN has expressed concern for months about a worsening humanitarian situation in the war zone, where Khartoum cited security concerns in tightly restricting the operations of foreign aid agencies.

Lodi accused the government of "delaying tactics" and said the rebels would officially request the cross-border operation at a meeting between the signatories next Tuesday.

He said the rebels are still "committed to the MOU" and to working with the three foreign organisations.

Ali Adam, a director general of Sudan's Humanitarian Aid Commission, confirmed on Monday that implementation of the memorandum was behind schedule. He said the required planning meetings had not yet occurred.

"Our duty and our responsibility is to provide aid to our people in South Kordofan and Blue Nile," Rabbie Abdelatti Ebaid, a senior official of the ruling National Congress Party, told AFP. "Each and every and all support will be provided by our government."

Under the memorandum reached between Khartoum, the UN, AU and Arab League, the "entire humanitarian operations" are to be under Sudanese government supervision.

A United Nations source said the UN "has to respect the sovereignty of nation states" and could not enter a country without its permission.

But the source, declining to be named, said the UN "does understand why some humanitarian organisations, seeing what is happening... may wish to pursue" a cross-border operation.

"We will continue to work with the government to facilitate humanitarian assistance into SPLM-North areas under the memorandum of understanding that was signed with the tripartite," the UN source told AFP.

Ethnic minority insurgents of the SPLM-N were allies of southern rebels during Sudan's 22-year civil war, which ended in a 2005 peace deal and South Sudan's independence in July last year.

Sudan accuses South Sudan of supporting the SPLM-N, a charge which analysts believe despite denials by the government in Juba.

"We are not acknowledging the so-called northern sector of SPLM," Ebaid said.

The UN says more than 650,000 people have been displaced or severely affected by the fighting in South Kordofan and Blue Nile, where related conflicts began in June and September last year.

Government figures showed that more than 8,700 were uprooted in the latest fighting which continued this week around Al Moreib village in northeastern South Kordofan.

The rebels said on Friday that the government "campaign" against civilian areas aimed to stymie the international aid plan.

In total, more than 160,000 refugees have fled to South Sudan from South Kordofan and Blue Nile, the UN says.

In mid-August, the UN's World Food Programme began rare air drops of food to the refugees in South Sudan, calling the move "a sign of the increasing urgency" with much of the area inaccessible because of flooding.

A Little Information About Canary Breeding

Canaries are a favorite pet bird. People like them because the are so pretty and their songs are very pretty, and appreciated by many people. Many canary owners go out and buy a second one, or third, or every fourth, because they find out that they love their first canary so much. Some people enjoy them so much that they get into canary breeding.

There are several things to think about when it comes to canary breeding. One is how can someone tell if the canaries are old enough to breed. Male canaries reach sexual maturity at about 12 months old. A female canary will hit sexual maturity at about the same time. The recommended age for a breeding pair of canaries is between 12-48 months old. That gives the best chance of success, and a brood of healthy baby canaries.

Another question for people who want to get into canary breeding is how to tell if the canaries are ready to breed. Once they are the right age, trying to figure out when it?s time can be hard. For a male, he will be ready when his vent is popping out by 1/4 of an inch. He will also start singing more, so that he can attract his mate. He should also have stopped molting. A female canary is ready to breed when she starts shredding different materials in her cage in order to create a nest. She might also start pulling out feathers from her tail to feather her nest. Her belly will also start to fill with eggs.

One thing that people new to canary breeding is that not all pairs will work. Just like anyone else, males like to have a choice. Just because canary cages are close together doesn?t mean that they will pick each other. A male might like another female better. A particular female might think that another male will be a better deal.

When someone starts breeding their canaries, they need to know a lot of things. These are some of the most basic issues. There are others, which means the owner needs to do a little research before getting ready.

The Next Big Tech Battle Could Be Apple Versus ... - Business Insider

Steve Kovach, Business Insider

Is Jeff Bezos Tim Cook's next target?

?

Bolstered by a huge victory in its patent-infringement case against Samsung, where could Apple turn next?

To the north, in Seattle, there's a juicy target: Amazon.com.

Amazon is widely expected to introduce new mobile devices next month?possibly a smartphone but almost certainly new Kindle tablets that compete with the iPad.

Either way, Apple's not going to like that.

Far more broadly, Amazon and Apple have been on a collision course in digital media and e-commerce for years.

Apple and Amazon sell music. Apple and Amazon sell movies. Apple and Amazon sell e-books. And Apple and Amazon both sell tablets, the iPad and the Kindle families, designed to consume the media they sell.

The companies weren't always on unfriendly terms. In 2000, Apple and Amazon struck a patent cross-licensing agreement that covered Amazon's famous 1-Click checkout.

And in the ensuing years, the companies have not publicly engaged in any notable patent battles, suggesting that the companies' deal may provide for an ongoing patent ceasefire.

We asked Apple and Amazon for comment on this story. Amazon declined to comment and Apple didn't respond to our request.

But even in that press release announcing its 1-Click deal, Apple was touting its own innovations. It noted that one-click downloading of digital software was an "industry first."

In the years since, Apple has been building up a formidable patent library in digital media. Patrice Gautier, an Apple engineering vice president in charge of the iTunes Store and iCloud, has his name on a dozen patents, most?related to downloading and purchasing digital media, and 30 pending applications.

In May, patents expert Florian Mueller speculated that Amazon could be a "logical" target for some of Apple's tablet-related patents.

Amazon has been busy, too. In 2010, it signed a cross-licensing deal with Microsoft to cover a variety of patents. And recently, it's been recruiting intellectual-property experts to build up its portfolio.

Apple and Amazon have been tussling in court over the term "app store" after Amazon launched its Android Appstore in March 2011. Apple believes it's a protected trademark. Amazon says it's a generic term.

Meanwhile, Apple has been making quiet moves into e-commerce, noting that 400 million users have registered credit cards to their iTunes accounts, more than double the number of active Amazon accounts. Its new mobile operating system, iOS 6, has a Passbook feature for coupons and tickets which many believe is its first step into offering a digital wallet.

If Apple and Amazon go to war, the dispute could blow away Apple v. Samsung, covering smartphones, tablets, e-commerce, and digital payments. The question of just how explosive it could get depends on the details of the agreement Amazon and Apple struck way back in 2000.

Get ready, because Apple and Amazon are already girded for battle.

Nutrition tied to improved sperm DNA quality in older men: Healthy micronutrient intake linked to reduced DNA fragmentation

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? A new study led by scientists from the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) found that a healthy intake of micronutrients is strongly associated with improved sperm DNA quality in older men. In younger men, however, a higher intake of micronutrients didn't improve their sperm DNA.

In an analysis of 80 healthy male volunteers between 22 and 80 years of age, the scientists found that men older than 44 who consumed the most vitamin C had 20 percent less sperm DNA damage compared to men older than 44 who consumed the least vitamin C. The same was true for vitamin E, zinc, and folate.

"It appears that consuming more micronutrients such as vitamin C, E, folate and zinc helps turn back the clock for older men. We found that men 44 and older who consumed at least the recommended dietary allowance of certain micronutrients had sperm with a similar amount of DNA damage as the sperm of younger men," says Andy Wyrobek of Berkeley Lab's Life Sciences Division.

"This means that men who are at increased risk of sperm DNA damage because of advancing age can do something about it. They can make sure they get enough vitamins and micronutrients in their diets or through supplements," adds Wyrobek.

Wyrobek conducted the research with a team of researchers that includes Brenda Eskenazi of the University of California at Berkeley's School of Public Health and scientists from the University of Bradford in the United Kingdom. They report their findings in the August 27 online issue of the journal Fertility and Sterility.

Their research comes as more men over 35 have children, which raises public health concerns. Previous research conducted in Wyrobek's lab found that the older a man is, the more he's likely to have increased sperm DNA fragmentation, chromosomal rearrangements, and DNA strand damage. Older men are also more likely to have increased frequencies of sperm carrying certain gene mutations, such as those leading to dwarfism. These findings help explain why aging men are less fertile and are predicted to have more chromosomally defective pregnancies and a higher proportion of offspring with genetic defects.

But until now, researchers haven't understood whether diet can protect against the detrimental effects of aging on the sperm genome.

The scientists studied a group of about 80 men between 20 and 80 years old with an average age of 44. They were recruited several years ago as part of the California Age and Genetic Effects on Sperm Study when Wyrobek was at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Each man who participated in the study filled out a 100-item questionnaire that estimated their average daily vitamin intake, both from food and supplements.

In addition, their sperm DNA quality was assessed via a lab analysis in which a voltage gradient pulls broken DNA strands from intact strands within the sperm nucleus.

Each volunteer's intake of a micronutrient was classified as low, moderate, or high based on how they compared to other participants. The median daily intake, both from diet and supplements, was 162 milligrams for vitamin C, 23.7 milligrams for vitamin E, 2,586 micrograms for ?-carotene, 475 grams for folate, and 12.3 milligrams for zinc. Many participants, even those who reported to be healthy, consumed much less than the recommended dietary allowance for many of the micronutrients.

The scientists analyzed the data several ways and came up with the same result each time: A diet high in antioxidants and micronutrients may decrease the risk of producing sperm with DNA damage, especially in older men.

Why this is so isn't a mystery. Antioxidants scavenge reactive molecules that cause oxidative damage to cells. Studies have shown that dietary supplementation with antioxidants and increased consumption of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables can decrease the amount of oxidative DNA damage.

Based on their results, the scientists believe this same protective mechanism may also be at work in the reproductive tract of older men.

"The different response of the old and young men presents new opportunities for health care, especially for older men planning families," says Wyrobek.

More research is needed, however. Although the scientists found a clear link between higher vitamin intake and improved sperm DNA quality in older men, they don't know whether this link extends to male fertility and the health of offspring.

"Our research points to a need for future studies to determine whether increased antioxidant intake in older fathers will improve fertility, reduce risks of genetically defective pregnancies, and result in healthier children," says Wyrobek. "The research also raises a broader question beyond sperm DNA: How might lifestyle factors, including higher intakes of antioxidants and micronutrients, protect somatic as well as germ cells against age-related genomic damage?"

Storm Isaac forces Republicans to rework convention script

TAMPA (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Isaac forced Republicans on Sunday to rewrite the script for their national convention in Tampa as party officials scrambled to make sure candidate Mitt Romney's message to voters would not be blown off course.

Isaac was expected to spare Tampa a direct hit and strike, with hurricane strength, farther north along the Gulf Coast this week.

But it has left Republicans - who canceled events on Monday in anticipation of the storm - with a new challenge to salvage the convention's remaining three days: Help Romney make an aggressive, memorable argument to be president, while being careful to show sensitivity to those at risk from the storm.

It is a quandary Republicans also faced in 2008, when they chose to delay their convention in St. Paul, Minnesota. That year, Hurricane Gustav hit the Louisiana coast as the convention was set to nominate Arizona Senator John McCain as the Republican presidential nominee.

At the time, the party was still reeling from criticism of Republican President George W. Bush's handling of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated New Orleans in 2005. New Orleans is now threatened by Isaac's projected path.

Romney, who will face Democratic President Barack Obama in the November 6 election, is eager to use the nationally televised political extravaganza in Tampa to define himself to American voters after a series of campaign setbacks.

But Romney could be robbed of some media attention - or worse, have images of convention festivities juxtaposed with searing split-screen television images of the storm's onslaught if Isaac dominates the news this week.

Seeking to regain the initiative, convention organizers juggled the speaking schedule as Republican delegates converged on Tampa, where the party will formally nominate Romney and his vice presidential running mate, Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan.

The main speakers whose Monday appearances had to be scrapped were given slots on other nights, including House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee and Senator Rand Paul, son of Romney's former presidential rival Ron Paul.

Mindful of the potential for bad "optics" if Isaac hits the Gulf Coast at the height of the convention, Russ Schriefer, the Romney campaign's top convention planner, left open the possibility of more scheduling changes or even extending the gathering into Friday.

TELLING ROMNEY'S STORY

"We all know that a weather event is there," he told reporters on a conference call Sunday afternoon. "We're obviously monitoring what is going on. ... Concern has to be with the people who are in the path of the storm."

Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell said Sunday on ABC's "This Week" that despite competition from the storm coverage, he expected independent voters in particular to tune in to hear Romney's speech Thursday night and Ryan's the previous night.

"I think we'll still get a fair amount of attention," McDonnell said, "and the message will be good."

Part of Republican officials' aim is to present Romney's biography - his years as a private equity executive, Massachusetts governor and leader of the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics - in a flattering way that contrasts with the waves of attacks on Romney by the president and his allies.

"We're going to tell the Mitt Romney story. (And) we're still going to prosecute the president on what he promised, what he delivered, and why we think we need to save this country and put Mitt Romney in the White House," Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus told CNN on Sunday.

The Republican convention, just like the Democrats' similar gathering in Charlotte, North Carolina, early next month, is typically a celebratory event bringing together thousands of party activists from across the United States for a week of speeches, partying and strategizing.

For Romney, the importance of the convention cannot be overstated. Running even with Obama or slightly behind him in most opinion polls, Romney needs a bounce in the polls from the convention, particularly in the 10 or so politically divided "swing states," like Florida, likely to decide the election.

Romney enters convention week having made a self-inflicted error by telling a crowd in Michigan that "no one's ever asked to see my birth certificate," a joke that rekindled a storyline pushed by far-right conservatives over whether Obama was actually born in the United States.

Romney tried to get the focus on what he considers the paramount issue in the campaign, the weak U.S. economy, telling Fox News he and Ryan would offer "big and bold answers."

"America needs that kind of help at a time when so many people are out of work or underemployed or having a hard time making ends meet," he said in remarks broadcast on Sunday.

Convention organizers were working intensely to ensure that Isaac doesn't distract from Romney's mission. The storm lashed south Florida with winds and heavy rain on Sunday after battering the Caribbean.

Fueled by warm Gulf waters, Isaac was expected to strengthen to a Category 2 hurricane and hit the Gulf Coast somewhere between Florida and Louisiana at midweek, on or near the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said in an advisory.

A hurricane watch was extended westward to include New Orleans. A storm becomes a hurricane when sustained winds reach at least 74 miles per hour. At least seven people were killed when Isaac moved across Haiti.

SAFETY FIRST

The Republican convention will bring 50,000 visitors to the Tampa-St. Petersburg area, home to well over 4 million people. Over the last few days, local authorities have said they could handle the crowds and the approaching storm.

Many attendees booked earlier flights to be in place before any bad weather. Hotels said they were ready to shift party schedules or move outdoor events indoors.

Party officials were working with Florida state officials and emergency management to ensure the safety of those attending the convention. Heavy winds and rain can stretch for hundreds of miles out from the center of a major storm.

A Lynyrd Skynyrd concert planned for Sunday night was canceled because of the likely severe weather. But several other pre-convention events were going ahead as planned, including a giant welcoming party at the Tropicana Field.

Democratic Vice President Joe Biden, who had planned to visit Florida during the convention but canceled his Tampa event because of the storm, has decided to also cancel his other planned events in Orlando and St. Augustine, Florida.

The Occasional Writer | Florida Institute of Technology

The Occasional Writer

By Dr. John Lavelle

The title of this little blog contains a zeugma.? The word occasional has two meanings within the same sentence.? The occasional writer may mean one who writes occasionally or it may mean one who writes for an occasion.? In this case it means both since almost all writers, even those who only write occasionally, write for an occasion, the reason for writing whether it be to explore, persuade, inform, or deliberate.

I am hoping this blog, on occasion, will discuss different aspects of writing delving into not only scholarly or academic writing, but creative writing.? I?m also hoping on occasion I can convince others, who are experts in their field, or those who feel they have something to contribute, to take a little time and become a guest editor.

What I?d like to speak (write) about in this secession is something rather general, (general is a good way to start) the messy and neat writer.? These are two poles on a continuum of writing styles and most people will fall somewhere in between.? The messy and neat writer exist in both scholarly and creative writing.? The messy writer, which I happen to be, writes all over the place, while the neat writer seems to go in one direction.? The messy writer has an idea as to what he or she wants to write about, but only an idea.? The first draft is usually exploratory whether the writer admits it or not.? It, at best, is a focused free-write, a way to get all the ideas bouncing around in the writer?s head down on paper.? The writing goes every which way and usually doesn?t seem to work toward a conclusion, sometimes even contradicting itself.

This is fine and in fact is an opportunity to explore ideas and come up with something more interesting than the writer might have started with, or to understand the subject better discovering insights that might not have been obvious at the beginning.? However, there is also a danger someone else, those authors you?ve researched, will end up unduly influencing the writing or actually writing the article/paper.

The other great danger, a trap many students fall into, is to think that this focused free write is a draft or for the students, somehow a finished piece.? A note to students here who might be reading this blog.? Ninety-nine percent of you cannot write a paper the night before it?s due.? The truly neat writer is rare.? Though in your other classes you can cram and regurgitate information back on to the test paper, stress and fatigue lead to more mistakes in writing.? Messy writers need time.? They need to do it, leave it, forget about it, and then come back to it.? As first year writing coaches are found of saying a messy writer needs to re-vision it, to re-see the paper.

One of my professors said to me while I was a struggling undergraduate, ?You?ll never know what you?re writing about until you?ve written the paper five times.?? It turned out to be fairly true.? If a messy writer needs to give him or herself the right to write anything including really bad stuff, the messy writer must also allow him or herself to throw out anything, hopefully the bad stuff.? In this way the writer writes and revises, writes and revises, not unlike a sculptor adding and removing clay.

The neat writer does all this messiness in his or her head.? The writer does not suddenly sit down to a keyboard and write a finished piece, but contemplates, (free writes) mentally, finds the focus as he or she researches and then moves the research more in focus as the research goes on.? The neat writer, many times, makes a formal outline.? Many create note cards (the neat equivalent to the paragraphs of the drafts of the messy writer).? Thus when a neat writer sits down to write everything is prepared.? The difference could a comparison of two people cooking dinner.? The neat writer would be that person who lines up everything needed for dinner on the counter before starting, all in neat little bowls, the main ingredients already chopped up.? The messy writer, ?when contemplating fixing dinner, in this scenario, would be heading out the door with a gun or basket wanting to see what the main course might be.

Most writers fall someplace between the two poles of the neat and messy writer.? The point is to understand which one you are and to deal honestly with that.? If you strive to be a neat writer, you?re going to have to do ?neat? things, prepare extensively before you write, use copious notes and a formal outline.? Actually writing the paper becomes the end of the process.? If you fall into the messy writer category and would rather not change, and there are very good reasons not to, you will need to make time for multiple drafts, for putting the drafts away and coming back to them for revising.

Judge awards Usher primary custody of his kids

Usher Raymond at a hearing to discuss child custody with his ex-wife Tameka Foster at Fulton County State Court on Aug. 15, 2012 in Atlanta, Ga.

By Josh Grossberg, E! Online

Usher is a happy dad right about now. That's because an Atlanta judge has awarded the "Yeah!" singer primary custody of his two sons with ex-wife Tameka Raymond, E! News has learned.

An insider close to Usher (full name Usher Raymond IV), tells E! News that "it has been a long and difficult process for everyone but it's good to see that an independent third party has made a decision."

More from E: Read the court's ruling here?

While the 33-year-old R&B star retains primary physical custody, a Fulton County Court official adds however that both parties will continue to share legal custody over 4-year-old Usher Raymond V and 3-year-old Naviyd Raymond.?

The former couple has been locked in a nasty custody dispute in the intervening years since they divorced in November 2009.?

On Tuesday, Usher was found in willful contempt by the court for violating provisions of their settlement agreement that required each parent to have the right to information about their kids' respective health, education and extracuriccular activities.?

More from E: Usher held in contempt of court, ordered to reinstate ex's Saks card?

The singer meanwhile charged that his ex was "incapable of being a proper parent" and in previous, emotional testimony in May, claimed that Raymond (nee Foster) demonstrated emotional instability by spitting on his girlfriend, taking a swing at him and interfering with his time with the boys.?

Apparently the judge agreed enough to hand him today's victory.?

More from E: Not every celebrity split turns nasty; check 'em out here?

A rep for Tameka wasn't available for comment.?

Excessive amounts of alcohol may link to cancer

Excessive amounts of alcohol may link to cancer Too much alcohol may be linked to certain forms of cancer.

Researchers at the American Chemical Society found that when people metabolize alcohol, their bodies form a substance very similar to formaldehyde -- a known human carcinogen.

The study found most casual drinkers are unlikely to develop cancer from social drinking because the human body usually turns carcinogenic substances into harmless chemicals.

Food Waste Is Overwhelming. Here Are Five Things People Are Doing About It

Mustafa Quraishi/AP

Rotten jackfruit and tomatoes are sorted at a dump in New Delhi. India loses an estimated 40 percent of its produce harvest for lack of infrastructure. And Americans waste about 40 percent of our food.

The food world is buzzing today about the latest news on just how often we waste perfectly good food. And we admit, the statistics are pretty depressing.

About 40 percent of food in the United States today goes uneaten. The average American consumer wastes 10 times as much food as someone in Southeast Asia ? up 50 percent from Americans in the 1970s. Yet, 1 in 6 Americans doesn't have enough to eat. And food waste costs us about $165 billion a year and sucks up 25 percent of our freshwater supply.

That's all according to the report with the not-so-subtle title, "Wasted: How America Is Losing Up to 40 Percent of Its Food from Farm to Fork to Landfill," just released by the Natural Resources Defense Council.

?

As we've reported, there are all kinds of offenders in this game, from restaurants to regular consumers and our refrigerators. But we thought we'd bring you some info on what some folks are doing to combat the waste and reroute the food where it's needed:

1. Coffee Could Be Fuel Times Two: Researchers are teaming up with Starbucks Hong Kong and a nonprofit called The Climate Group to turn used coffee grounds and wasted bakery items into fertilizer, plastics and biofuels, according to Fast Company.

2. Gents, Start Your Bikes: Caleb Philips founded Boulder Food Rescue, a group that collects produce and packaged goods that grocery stores consider no longer "sellable" and bikes them to shelters, housing projects and at-risk community outlets. Since September 2011, BFR has rescued more than 128,000 pounds of nutritious food and transported most of that to feed those in need, according to NPR's Participation Nation blog.

3. There's An App For That: Students at Arizona State University are developing a mobile phone app called FlashFood designed to connect restaurants with excess food to community groups in need, according to the blog EarthTechling. And Love Food Hate Waste is a free app for iPhone and Android that offers hints, tips and recipe ideas to keep home cooks from trashing those squishy tomatoes too soon.

4. Follow That Squash: NPR's Pam Fessler recently brought us this piece on how Wal-Mart and Feeding America have teamed up to get fresh but slightly imperfect fresh foods to the needy. And it's got some pretty cool graphics, too, where you can follow an ear of corn and some yellow squash from farm to table.

5. Do I Hear $100? Stay tuned tomorrow for a piece right here and on All Things Considered about how grocery stores are unloading food at auction that is discontinued, seasonal or near its expiration date, from NPR's Serri Graslie.

What cool anti-food-waste projects are you hearing about? Let us know in the comments section.

PFT: Seahawks' Rice to play Friday; Lynch out?

Jerry JonesAP

Another day, another NFL owner claiming that locking out the officials isn?t making a difference on the field.

This time it?s Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who said on 103.5 The Fan that he?s not concerned about the lockout.

?No I?m not,? Jones said. ?As long as it?s the same for both sides ? and it will be ? we?ll be all right. And they?re going to get better as they move along.?

Jones, who was fined $25,000 in 2008 for criticizing referee Ed Hochuli and fined $100,000 in 2009 for discussing issues relating to the Collective Bargaining Agreement with the players, apparently doesn?t have any problem talking about the Collective Bargaining Agreement with the officials. Jones also said he doesn?t agree with those who believe NFL refereeing needs to be a full-time job, which seems to put him at odds with some of the owners, who have suggested that a new deal with the NFL Referees? Association would include at least some of the refs agreeing to give up their other jobs and devote all of their time to officiating.

?I think we get better people by having officials that don?t make it full time,? Jones said. ?When you only are officiating 16 games a year, plus the playoff games, it doesn?t warrant full-time officials.?

Ultimately, Jones said, he hasn?t noticed any difference with replacements, and he said he thinks that if there are mistakes on the field, instant replay should be able to get it right.

?I haven?t, really, because I can take any game at this juncture in any year and come up with criticism of the officiating,? Jones said. ?It?s subjective in so many areas, and we?ve got in place a pretty good backup system now with our replays, and when it?s replayed. If anything, I?ve seen in a couple of our games the replay procedure needs improvement. . . . That has, in my mind, nothing to do with these replacement officials.?

Jones sounds like he?s convinced that the officials? lockout could go on indefinitely without affecting the NFL. Something tells me he?ll change his mind if a bad call from a replacement official costs the Cowboys a game.

Akin rebuffs Romney, Republican, calls to quit Senate race

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Congressman Todd Akin, under fire for controversial remarks on abortion and rape, insisted on Tuesday he would not leave the Missouri Senate race, despite pressure from fellow Republicans and talk of who might replace him on the November 6 ballot.

Akin - a staunch abortion opponent - vowed to stay in the contest against Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill, indicating he represents a conservative movement that must be heard.

A 5 p.m. local time (6 p.m. EDT) deadline passed with no indication he planned to take his name off the ballot.

Akin was defiant. His campaign posted a new web site on Tuesday seeking donations with a banner "I'm pro-life and I Stand with Todd Akin." It had briefly featured a picture of a fetus and a picture of McCaskill with U.S. President Barack Obama, but the fetus image was later removed.

"We are going to continue in this race for U.S. Senate," Akin told "The Mike Huckabee Show," a radio program hosted by the former Arkansas governor.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Tuesday joined the chorus calling for him to pull out of his race after Akin claimed in a weekend television interview that it was extremely rare for women to get pregnant from "legitimate rape.

"Today, his fellow Missourians urged him to step aside, and I think he should accept their counsel and exit the Senate race," said Romney, who previously condemned Akin's comments.

The outrage over Akin's remarks sent waves of anxiety through the Republican Party a week before it reaches out to independent voters, especially women, at its national convention where it will nominate Romney to run against Obama.

Republicans fear the Akin episode could prevent them from winning in Missouri, lessening their chances of picking up the four seats they need ensure a majority in the 100-member Senate.

McCaskill had trailed Akin by about 10 points but a Public Policy Polling survey on Monday had Akin ahead by 1 point.

WHAT ABOUT JOBS?

To the dismay of many Republicans, Akin's woes have cast a spotlight on a part of the platform party members again endorsed on Tuesday: a call to oppose abortion with no mention of exceptions in cases of rape and incest.

That is not the position of Romney, who has said abortion should be allowed to end pregnancies resulting from rape or incest.

Obama, who supports abortion rights, also strongly denounced Akin's remarks, saying "rape is rape."

Romney's vice presidential running mate, U.S. Representative Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, has expressed a harder line on abortion, saying it should be allowed only to save the life of the mother. The campaign said this week a Romney/Ryan administration would reflect Romney's position.

Ryan, who has co-sponsored anti-abortion legislation with Akin, called the Missouri candidate and suggested he think about leaving the Senate contest. "He thought I maybe should give some thought to stepping down, but he didn't tell me what to do. And that's because he's a very respectful and a very decent guy," Akin said on the Sean Hannity radio program.

The controversy is a distraction in a campaign Romney has sought to keep tightly focused on the economy and jobs.

Tim Wildmon, president of the influential American Family Association, was one of several social conservatives who have come to Akin's defense.

"This is a decent, honorable man who has been pro-life and pro-traditional values. He has apologized for his choice of words and that should be the end of it," Wildmon said.

Although religious conservatives are a crucial part of the Republican base, many party leaders say its central message should be its conservative approach to fiscal issues like debt and deficits.

"It's not that we keep shooting ourselves in the foot. We keep shooting ourselves in the eyes," said former Missouri Senator John Danforth, one of a group of current and former U.S. senators from the state who urged Akin to step aside.

WHERE TO FIND A WOMAN SUCCESSOR

Under Missouri election law, Akin had until 5 p.m. local time (6 p.m. EDT) to get his name off the ballot for the November 6 election most easily. But he faces a harder deadline on September 25, the last day his name can be removed with a court order.

If Akin withdraws, the Missouri Republican committee would name a successor to run against McCaskill. Possible candidates include the two Republicans Akin defeated in the primary just two weeks ago - St. Louis businessman John Brunner and former state Senator Sarah Steelman.

But the party can pick any candidate.

Other possibilities include former Senator Jim Talent, who lost narrowly to McCaskill in 2006 and Representative Jo Ann Emerson, considered a favorite because many Republicans think the party would best reassure women voters by running a woman.

In another sign that he is not leaving, US News and World Report reported that Akin spent $150,000 on Tuesday for television advertisements in seven media markets.

But he will struggle to keep up with McCaskill, especially after the Karl Rove-linked American Crossroads Super PAC and the Republican Senate committee said they would hold back millions in funding earmarked for the race.

McCaskill's campaign is using Akin's comments in its fundraising. Emily's List, which supports Democratic women candidates, said it has seen a big jump in fundraising.

Akin apologized again in an Internet advertisement called "Forgiveness." And he sent a fundraising letter to supporters on Tuesday asking for donations of $3 or more.

Making Choices is Hard: 3 tips for discernment. | iwilllowermynet ...

Here are a few tips for those who are discerning their life?s vocation (single, married, priest, deacon, religious).? All these tips apply to anyone.

1. Discernment is different from self discovery.? Some people enter into discernment as if it is a process of self-discovery.? It is totally normal to try to ?find yourself?? and answer basic questions about who you are and what you believe.? It is crucial to establish what is most important to you in life, what you stand for, and what goals you are setting in the life journey.? But this is not the same as discerning a vocation, for discernment is finding God?s will for your life.? This is different from finding your ?identity?.?A potential spouse, a religious superior, or a seminary formator would hope that you would already have a well-established sense of yourself.? These things will also change during discernment, and will change during the course of an adult?s vocational life.? You can know yourself really well, and still?know very little about God.

Discernment is truly listening for God?s voice and following Him when He calls (not literally a booming voice from heaven, of course, but a discerning of the Holy Spirit moving in your heart).? St. Ignatius of Loyola?s Discernment of Spirits is recommended by me as very helpful with discernment prayer.? The Erie Diocesan Vocations Office also has good, basic material to help you get started on discerning the Spirit?s movements in your heart.? Trust that God has a plan for you!? You can?t follow?that plan?with fidelity, and become the person God desires you to be, unless you enter into daily discernment, with prayer, practice of religion, and moral conversion of heart.

2. Discernment is not primarily about??self-improvement?.? Some people treat?discernment as if it is spiritual self-improvement (in other words, what will fulfill my needs most completely?).? Self-improvement can focus too much on personal gain and count too much?the?personal costs.? At the center of a Christian spirituality is the Cross.? Should it surprise us that each calling of Christ in our lives comes with a cost, which often times seems like personal loss?? Each vocation will include with it lots of suffering, but this should not make us afraid.? We remember that Jesus? Passion, as fearful as it was, lasted only for a time.? He is Risen for eternity!? Even if our suffering must be long-suffering, it pales in comparison to the glory that awaits us when we listen for God and follow God.? The ultimate self-improvement is the Resurrection, but first comes sacrifice.

Occasionally, a young man in reference to priesthood, or a young woman in reference to religious life,?? will say, ?I want to get married and have kids.?? Yes!? That is good!? For most people, getting married and having kids is a healthy, praiseworthy, and good thing.? Most priests and religious, as they were discerning the call, had that desire in their hearts, too.? That desire is a natural part of being human.? It doesn?t mean that you stop discerning a priestly or consecrated vocation.? It celibacy a sacrifice?? Common sense tells us that it is a big sacrifice.? But if we are called to it, we will only be blessed if we answer the call, and not run away.? As Jesus said in reference to celibacy, ?Those who can accept this ought to accept it.? (Matthew 19:12)

3. Discernment is primarily about Hope with a capital H.? It takes a lot?of hope to simply live a Christian life, that is, a life founded on the principles and teachings of Christ and His Apostles.? This is because so much of the daily experience is filled with contrary evidence.? Many things we see can be used as very convincing proofs against the existance of a loving, powerful, personal God.? Yet, there are clear, shining, bright moments in the life of discernment that convince us that every word of Jesus is true!? These are moments of enlightenment by the Holy Spirit.? These moments help us to accept a hard teaching of the Church, to?help a neighbor in need, and to put our own needs aside.? These moments build trust in God, that He indeed has plans for our welfare, not for our woe.

When we discern in patience and hope, God will place thoughts and movements in our minds and on our hearts.? These movements confirm what God has revealed in Scripture and in the teachings of the Church.? They are in harmony with what Christ has instituted.? Yet, these movements in our hearts are specific messages to us, which move us to do something (or avoid something).? These are the movements that we need to be attentive to in discernment.? These are the movements of the Spirit which prompted Abraham, Moses, David, Elijah, John the Baptist, and St. Paul.? These are the joyful, peaceful, and long-lasting movements of the Holy Spirit.

When we follow these movements, they move us towards our vocation, whether it be as a?spouse, consecrated vows, or a promise of life in Holy Orders.? We make these big movements in vocational discernment with a large helping of Hope.? We live in hope!? We are a people of hope! That is why we discern.? Our vocation is a sign of hope, a piece in the larger work of God, to bring all things to completion in peace, joy, and love.

That sounds like a good deal to me!? How about you?
