North Korea Can Mount Nuke on Missile, Representative Reveals

Call it a classification error. Rep. Doug Lamborn, R-Co., thoroughly read a report from the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and found a two-sentence excerpt that was not marked as classified. The Denver Post reports that the briefing states that the DIA believes with "moderate confidence" that North Korea has the ability to make a nuclear weapon that is small enough to be mounted onto a missile. He questioned the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Martin Dempsey, about the statements and the uproar began. The information about this North Korean ability had not been previously made public.

Washington reactions

Dempsey told the House committee that he had not seen the report, an ABC story reports. Pentagon press spokesman George Little released a statement that reads, in part, "While I cannot speak to all the details of a report that is classified in its entirety, it would be inaccurate to suggest that the North Korean regime has fully tested, developed, or demonstrated the kinds of nuclear capabilities referenced in the passage." The Director of National Intelligence , James Clapper, went further in his response "I concur with the earlier Department of Defense statement ... I would add that the statement read by the Member is not an Intelligence Community assessment. Moreover, North Korea has not yet demonstrated the full range of capabilities necessary for a nuclear armed missile.."

South Korean reactions

UPI quotes a spokesperson for the RoK Defense Ministry Friday as stating that he does not believe the North has been able to miniaturize a nuclear weapon to fit a missile at this time. In a joint press conference with Secretary of State John Kerry, Yun Byung-se, the South Korean Foreign Minister , is quoted by the Voice of America as saying that the DPRK's nuclear capability is not "at full level" to place bomb atop an operational ICBM.

A statement in a North Korean newspaper , the Rodong Sinmun, on Thursday warned Japan, as the Japan Daily Press states, "that the country of Japan will become a battlefield if Tokyo continues to push towards war." Fox News confirmed today that the SBX-1 sea-based radar had been moved, as had been speculated last week, into the Western Pacific to bolster ballistic missile defenses . The Chinese city of Hunchun, located near where Korea, China and Russia's borders meet, held its first ever "anti-air raid evacuation drills ", as reported in Chinese by SINA. Chosun Ilbo, in its English edition today, passed on news that the Chinese have moved a new Army corps to the North Korean border. The Kaesong Industrial Zone remains closed.
