Michigan-recruit Derrick Green will soon decide where he plays his college football. According to The Detroit Free Press, Green revealed via Twitter when he will officially announce his decision. The 5-star recruit would help lead the Michigan Wolverines to surprising success in the 2013 season.
According to 247Sports Composite Rankings, Green is listed as the third-best running back and the 26th-best recruit in the class of 2013.?
Green has long been on the Michigan recruiting list and spoke earlier this year saying that Michigan is the favorite, via The Detroit Free Press:
Yeah, they are still the leader [by a small margin].?Why? Because that school has not had any coaching changes, it is a top academic program, definitely a high chance to come out as a true freshman and playing, and I have a good relationship with the coaching staff.
As Green mentioned, there is a great chance he gets to play as a true freshman. Along with playing, Green should also get every opportunity to earn a significant role in the Wolverines offense because of the turnover at the running back position.?
Michigan had a decent rushing attack last season, but most of the success was limited to Denard Robinson. He led the team with 1,266 rushing yards, playing from the running back position only part of the season. As a senior this year, Robinson will be moving on to the NFL where he will try to play wide receiver.?
The second most productive back was junior Fitzgerald Toussaint, who had 514 yards on the season. Toussaint broke his leg on Nov. 17 against Iowa, and his availability during the offseason and into the season are still in question.
This should open the door for Green to have chances to play right away.
At 6'0", 220 pounds, Green?is a big back with blazing speed that makes him a nightmare for opposing defenses. He can pound the football through the middle of the line and still has getaway speed when he reaches the second level.?
As with many true freshman, Green may initially struggle to adjust to the speed of the college game. He should get better with more carries and more playing time. If senior-to-be quarterback Devin Gardner can carry the team during the first few weeks, Green should be able to pick up his play down the stretch of the season.
Gardner is one of the biggest keys to how much success the Wolverines can have this season. He played well during when he got opportunities last season, but will need to grow as a player for the team to reach the next level. Adding a player with Green's skill-set would certainly make things easier for Gardner and the rest of the Michigan football program.?
