Tornado hits Ohio's Ursuline College; no one hurt

A tornado of 110 mph winds hit Ursuline College in northeast Ohio early Saturday morning, collapsing a wall of the school's athletic center and damaging other buildings but causing no injuries, officials said.

The EF1 twister hit about 3:35 a.m. northwest of the college and continued across part of the campus, meteorologist William Comeaux of the National Weather Service in Cleveland said. It reached 100-200 yards wide and traveled 1.3 miles.

Only a few students were on campus at the time and they were close to the athletic center that was hardest hit, a college spokeswoman said.

"The blessing is that there was no loss of life or injury," Sister Diana Stano, president of the 1,500-student school about 13 miles east of Cleveland, said on its website.

No one answered the main number for the college Saturday evening but a recorded message said the campus was closed Saturday and Sunday to assess the damage.

The website said the storm caused an external wall of the school's O'Brien Athletic Center to collapse and destroyed part of the roof. It also damaged several other buildings, including the Dauby Science Center and the Ralph M. Besse Library. Many trees were uprooted or destroyed and other campus facilities had minor damage.

College spokeswoman Angela DelPrete said only about five students were on campus at the time and they were about 1,000 feet from the gymnasium. She described debris scattered around the campus and broken windows. Weather service photos showed roof tiles torn away on the gymnasium exposing splintered wood and support beams.

Stano told The Plain Dealer that Ursuline was accepted as an NCAA Division II school only last week.

"Now we don't have a place to play," she said.

Ursuline was founded by Roman Catholic nuns as the first women's college in Ohio. Men now also attend the school.

Despite the damage Saturday, Comeaux said, "It's a beautiful area with lots of trees."

He said it's been about two years since a tornado has touched down in the region; the state averages 17-19 tornadoes per year. A disaster relief fund will be established to help rebuild the campus, the website said.

The new designs, which were first released in April, remove the ?C? from the side, add the new ?Jonathan the Husky? logo to the front of the helmets and the new ?UConn? logo in back.

These are only slightly different than the original designs released in April. Muncy also said the team could sport a blue version of the helmets.

Android Backups Could Expose Wi-Fi Passwords to NSA

Google's "back up my data feature" for Android may be a convenient and easy way to back up files, but it also may put network security at risk by exposing the passwords of encrypted Wi-Fi networks.

On his personal blog, Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) staff technologist Micah Lee pointed out that the backup feature syncs all the network passwords your Android devices remember to Google's cloud storage.

"Because Android is so popular, it's likely that Google has plaintext Wi-Fi passwords for the majority of password-protected Wi-Fi networks in the world," Lee wrote.

As an Android device owner adds Wi-Fi network passwords over the course of using the device, every new password is saved on the device. But because Android devices aren't equipped to encrypt passwords, the devices must be saving and transmitting those passwords in plaintext.

"With your home Wi-Fi password, an attacker can sniff Wi-Fi traffic outside your house (without connecting to your network) and then decrypt it all, passively eavesdropping on your private network," Lee wrote.

"If the attacker wants to do more active attacks, they can connect to your Wi-Fi network and mount a man-in-the-middle attack to eavesdrop on and modify any unencrypted Internet traffic," Lee added. "If you download a file, they can serve you a malicious version instead."

In a statement to tech blog Ars Technica, Google said that Android backup data was "encrypted in transit, accessible only when the user has an authenticated connection to Google and stored at Google data centers, which have strong protections against digital and physical attacks."

[The 5 Best Android Security Apps]

The Google representative did not specify whether the data was encrypted on Google's servers, but added that disabling backup on an Android device would cause all backups to be erased.

Lee noted that since Google at least partly cooperates with NSA data-mining operations, it's possible that the spy agency could get hold of Wi-Fi passwords.

The Android backup feature is turned on by default on stock Android devices, which includes the Nexus line of smartphones and tablets. It can be switched on or off under Backup & Reset in the stock Android Settings menu.

(Manufacturers that tweak their Android builds, such as Samsung or HTC, have their own policies.)

Backup is part of the main Android application program interface, or API, meaning it can be accessed by other apps in order to transmit data to the cloud in case the device were to become compromised.

With Launch Of 3.0, Adobe Social Supports Instagram, LinkedIn, And More, Plus Predictive Capabilities

adobe socialAdobe says version 3.0 of Adobe Social, its set of tools for social marketing, is going live right now. When I met with Bill Ingram, vice president of product management for digital marketing, and Emi Hofmeister, senior manager of product marketing, they said Adobe Social is part of a larger effort to revamp Adobe's marketing products. Last year, they conducted surveys about how the company was doing, and they discovered, as paraphrased by Ingram, that "we're kind of hard to do business with."
