Azerbaijanis injured in fight at French parliament

PARIS (AP) ? French officials on Thursday condemned Armenian and Azerbaijani activists for clashing with one another in France's parliament.

Azerbaijan and Armenia have been in conflict since 1988, over the disputed Caucasus Mountains territory of Nagorno-Karabakh.

The violent outburst occurred Tuesday in the National Assembly in Paris, during a conference commemorating the anniversary of violence against Armenians in 1988.

Two Azerbaijanis, a man and a woman, tried to interrupt the conference, saying they wanted to commemorate the anniversary of a 1992 massacre of Azerbaijanis. The Azerbaijani Embassy in Paris says the two were attacked and beaten by some of the pro-Armenia participants.

France's Foreign Ministry said Thursday it "regrets and condemns" the acts of violence committed inside the National Assembly.

The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry issued a statement criticizing French lawmakers for failing to stop the "brutal beating" of Azerbaijani activists. It blamed "the Armenian lobby and its sponsors" for the violence and voiced hope that French authorities will punish those responsible for the beating the woman, a French citizen of Azerbaijani origin, and an Azerbaijani student.

In Azerbaijan's capital, Baku, about 100 student activists protested near the French Embassy, holding placards with slogans such as "Shame on France!" and "For Justice!"

Germany discovers toxin in animal fodder

BERLIN (Reuters) - German authorities said on Friday they had found high levels of a toxin in animal fodder that was produced from maize imported from Serbia, but played down a possible risk to human health.

The discovery of aflatoxin in the shipment coincided with increased concerns over food industry safety amid Europe's horse meat scandal and this week's news that Germany is investigating possible large-scale fraud by organic egg producers.

Authorities in the northern German state of Lower Saxony, a major agricultural hub, said they had halted some 35,000 tonnes of the contaminated shipment at the port of Brake or in warehouses. But a further 10,000 tonnes had already been distributed to more than 3,500 farms in several states.

The feed was meant for pigs, cattle and poultry, it said.

The main threat to human health from any breaching of permissible toxin levels would stem from milk produced by dairy cows but the Lower Saxony farm ministry said stringent quality control levels meant any risk was "improbable".

Aflatoxin, produced by a fungus, is highly carcinogenic.

A spokesman for the federal government in Berlin told a news briefing that Germany had informed other European Union governments and the European Commission of the discovery, in line with EU health and safety rules.

Serbian authorities denied that the original shipment could have contained impermissibly high levels of aflatoxin.

"Our exports adhere to those (international and EU) norms as there is a double control, by both exporters and importers," said Vukosav Sakovic, head of the Serbian association of wheat producers and exporters.

"The probability that they purchased something bad is almost impossible... Out of a total 350,000 tonnes of corn exported in 2012, nothing was sent back and we dealt with some bad batches here in Serbia," he added.

Rep. Bob Goodlatte: Government is not enforcing existing US gun laws

The Monitor Breakfast

Two gun-control measures that could pass Congress include improving background check system and cracking down on illegal sales, says Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R) at a Monitor-sponsored breakfast on Wednesday.

His approach to gun-control legislation:?

The panel will ?be engaged in looking at ways to improve our efforts to keep weapons out of the hands of people who perpetrate tragedies.... The states are not doing the job they should in terms of getting data into [the background check] system.... The federal government is not doing the job they should be doing in enforcing our current gun laws.?

What gun legislation he expects to pass Congress:?

?The ability to produce legislation is going to be focused on two things.... One is improving the background check system, but universal background checks I do not think will be a part of that ... [and] the other will be improving the efforts to crack down on illegal sales of firearms on the streets.?

Dealing with the millions of individuals in the US illegally:?

?There is a broad spectrum between deportation and an easy, special pathway to citizenship to find a way to bring people out of the shadows and give them a legal status that will allow them to be better able to participate in our society, and we should be focused there.?

Chances for action on immigration reform legislation:

?Focusing on where we can find ... common ground on legal status would be a good step.... We have a broken immigration system.... If we can?t solve all of it, we should be solving as many parts as we can.??

Whether the GOP?s problems are a matter of flawed policy or poor communication:?

?It is primarily our ability to communicate our message, in a variety of ways.?

Law Would Force Patent Trolls To Pay For Failed Lawsuits Against ...

America?s esteemed lawmakers want heavy penalties for those who abuse the patent system. A bipartisan bill has been proposed to force so-called patent trolls, those who hoard patents for the sole purpose of suing innovators, to pay the legal costs if their frivolous patent lawsuits fail in court. The Saving High-Tech Innovators from Egregious Legal Disputes (SHIELD) Act has been widely praised by major tech companies and acronym enthusiasts.

?Patent trolls add no economic benefit to our nation,? said co-sponsor Representative Jason Chaffetz (CrunchGov Grade: A). Indeed, one study found that trolling activity accounts for 61 percent of all patent disputes.

Penalties for patent trolls have support from two influential people in the government: President Obama and the new chair of the House Judiciary Committee. During a Google+ hangout earlier this month, Obama said, ?They don?t actually produce anything themselves. They?re just trying to essentially leverage and hijack someone else?s idea to see if they can extort some money out of them.?

Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte (CrunchGov Grade: C), who helps set the congressional technology agenda, said he wants ?to focus on reforms to discourage frivolous patent litigation and keep U.S. patent laws up to date.?

In a refutation op-ed for The Hill, CEO of General Patent Corporation, Alexander Poltorak, argued that supporters of the SHIELD Act overestimate the number of frivolous lawsuits against software patent holders and claimed it was designed to ?intimidate patent owners whose IP rights are routinely infringed by corporate bullies.?

The updated version of the SHIELD Act will expand the provisions from tech firms to all industries.

'It was just spectacular': Group fights to save old Pan Am terminal

The Pan Am Worldport in 1965 (Hulton Archive/Getty Images)

NEW YORK?Kal Savi was just 10 years old in 1971 when he took his first flight out of the ?flying saucer? terminal at New York?s John F. Kennedy International Airport.

?It was just spectacular,? recalled Savi, the son of a former Pan Am employee who fell in love with the building.

Built in 1960 as the Pan Am Worldport, the building, now known as JFK?s Terminal 3, was an early icon of New York?s entry into the modern jet age. Its white circular roof and ultrasleek glass-and-steel interior was unlike anything anyone had ever seen, adding an air of glamour to the growing passenger airline industry.

But Savi, whose group Save the Worldport, plans to file paperwork with the New York State Preservation Office this week to win landmark status for Terminal 3, is the first to admit the building has seen better days. "It's sad to see how the place has deteriorated," he said.

Now home to Delta Airlines, the Worldport is a shell of what it used to be. Its circular roof is cracked and peeling and, inside, white tarps on the ceiling catch plaster and other debris from falling on passengers. Once considered one of the world?s most stylish airport facilities, it was named the world?s worst airline terminal last year by the travel site Frommer's?and soon, if airport officials get their way, it will be demolished.

In May, Delta will vacate the building and move its operations to the new Terminal 4, currently under construction next door. The airline and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runs the airport, have announced plans to bulldoze the Worldport by 2015. Their plan: Build a parking lot for airplanes.

But Savi and a group of other Worldport admirers are hoping to stop the plans for demolition. Save the Worldport, in addition to fighting for the terminal to get landmark status, hopes the old terminal will be given a place on the National Register of Historic Places, saving it from the wrecking ball.

Savi and Anthony Stramaglia, also one of the group?s leaders, want to see the Worldport restored and repurposed?possibly as an airline club or a public building, such as an aviation museum.

"The idea of just destroying this iconic building and paving it over is just absolutely ridiculous,? said Savi, an information technology worker from New Jersey who first launched a Facebook page to save the terminal in August 2010.

The page quickly attracted several thousand followers?more than 2,000 of whom later signed a petition calling on Delta and the Port Authority to reconsider their plans.

The efforts come as the Port Authority is wrapping up a $20 million renovation of the old Trans World Airways Flight Center, designed by architect Eero Saarinen, which received landmark status in 1994 amid rumors of its possible demise. The old TWA terminal, known as Terminal 5, is attached to a new JetBlue terminal and is being eyed as the possible home of a new boutique hotel.

But airport officials have not always been open to renovation. In 2011, JFK demolished Terminal 6, the home of the old National Airlines. Designed by architect I.M. Pei, the Sundrome, as it was known, was, along with the TWA terminal and Pan Am Worldport, one of the earliest buildings at JFK. Preservationists had tried and failed to save the building, and it was demolished to make way for JetBlue?s Terminal 5 expansion.

Savi and Stramaglia have appealed to officials at Delta and the Port Authority, arguing the Worldport is a building of historical consequence. They have gotten little response.

They and others have noted the building?s architectural significance, with one leading aviation architect, Hal Hayes, calling it the most important of JFK?s historic terminals. In addition to its unique design, the Worldport was one of the airline industry?s first terminals designed to allow planes to pull in directly to the building, allowing its passengers to disembark through a jet bridge.

The building?s supporters have also noted its cultural impact. Among other things, the Beatles departed from the terminal after their first trip to America in 1964. And it was the backdrop of several films, including the 1972 James Bond film ?Live and Let Die,? in which Roger Moore made his debut as Agent 007.

?It defined a whole new era of culture,? said Stramaglia, who joined the Save the Worldport effort in 2011.

He and Savi have likened their effort to the preservation of Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan, which had been threatened for demolition in the 1970s until a group led by former first lady Jackie Kennedy Onassis campaigned for its renovation. Hoping to replicate those efforts, Save the Worldport has been trying to recruit prominent civic leaders and celebrities to its cause?including former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and actor Alec Baldwin, a lifelong New Yorker who, Savi notes, played the founder of Pan Am in the 2004 film ?The Aviator.?

?What better celebrity to get on board than someone who is known for being outspoken?? Savi said.

At the same time, the group has appealed to Delta, in hopes of talking the airline into seeing the renovation of the Worldport as a ?branding opportunity? for the company. A Delta spokeswoman, however, told Yahoo News the future of the building is up to the Port Authority?which did not respond to several requests for comment.

So now Savi and Stramaglia are basing their hopes of saving the terminal on winning landmark status for the building and attracting public support for their cause.

?You don?t see terminals built like this anymore," said Stramaglia. "Yes, it?s not efficient and it?s way too small to continue operating as it is. But once it?s gone, it?s gone, and with it goes all of this history."

Facebook Annoyances, Retrieving Stolen Laptops, and Six-Strike SafetyFacebook Annoyances, Retrieving Stolen Laptops, and Six-Strike Safety This week on the podcast we're talking about Facebook annoyances, tracking stolen gadgets, and how much water you actually need. We're also answering your questions about streaming from XBMC over the web, sharing music with your significant other, and how the six-strike law can impact you.

How to Listen to This Week's Episode

Here's how you can listen to our episode:

News and Top Stories

Facebook Annoyances, Retrieving Stolen Laptops, and Six-Strike Safety

  • Google+ Adds Sign-In, Allowing Third-Party Apps to Integrate with Your Account: One glaring omission from Google+ was the lack of third-party app support, preventing you from sharing activity from certain apps and more. Today Google released sign-in for Google+ so developers can offer greater options.
  • Google Settings Gives You Convenient Access to Other Google Apps' Settings on Android: Google has quietly updated its Google Play service and automatically installed a new app for all of us Android users. It's called Google Settings, and all the app does is give you shortcuts to the settings for Google+, Maps, and Search, as well as your location and ad preferences.
  • Another iOS 6.1 Bug Allows Thieves to Bypass Your Lock Screen: Researchers have discovered another lock screen bug in iOS 6.1, which allows someone to get past your lock screen without a passcode and view that phone's data after plugging it into a computer.
  • How Facebook Is Using You to Annoy Your Friends (and How to Stop It): Facebook is using you, whether you know it or not. Sometimes it's obvious: you like a page, you click share, Facebook benefits. Other times, you have no clue until a friend asks you about a photo they saw that you liked. The unfortunate side-effect to all of this is that it can actually make you an unbearable annoyance to your friends, and you probably don't even know it. Here's how it works, and how to stop it.
  • Can I Track My Laptop or Smartphone After It's Been Stolen? Generally, no, but there are some last-ditch efforts you can try!
  • How Much Water Do I Actually Need to Drink Every Day? We decided to figure out the answer to this question that seems to have 1,000 different answers.

Questions and Answers

Facebook Annoyances, Retrieving Stolen Laptops, and Six-Strike SafetyEach week we answer five questions from readers and listeners. Here's what we tackled this week.

  • How can I stream my XBMC media over the internet? Set up an SMB/AFP share, forward the necessary ports, and access the share remotely through an XBMC client. This isn't terribly secure, however, so consider using SFTP instead. For added security, a VPN will allow you to act like your on your home network while you're away (read this guide for setup) but it will be kind of slow. Really, this is what Plex is best at. It handles all this trouble for you. You're an XBMC fan so you probably don't want to switch, but you might consider running a Plex server in addition to XBMC for remote access purposes only.
  • How do I merge my music with my wife's music so we can get it all on both our Google Music accounts? She uses iTunes, I use folders. There isn't an easy way. You need to start using iTunes or she needs to stop, but how you manage your music is going to have to be the same if you want to automatically sync everything. If you go the iTunes route, MediaRover or even Dropbox can sync everything. Any file syncing service can do the trick if you're just using folders, of course.
  • Will my VPN (VyprVPN to be exact) protect me from the new six strikes rules with my ISP? No, VyperVPN keeps logs. First, read about the six strikes law so you know how it works and how you need to protect yourself, then read our safe torrenting guide and VPN-choosing guide.
  • Should I ever use two Antivirus apps at the same time? No, never run two antivirus apps simultaneously because they'll conflict with each other. That said, you can install two and run them separately, always making sure one is off when the other is on.
  • Is there a good Android alternative to Due, my favorite iOS app? We couldn't think of anything and AlternativesTo didn't have suggestions, but sometimes searching the Google Play Store for the app you're looking for often helps. Due is such a simple name that none of these suggestions are really helpful. If anyone knows of a good alternative, please write in an tell us. That said, if the only thing barring you from switching is one app, you should just switch anyway. I didn't want to switch because my favorite iOS app, Downcast, didn't have an Android equivalent that I knew of. I switched anyway, tried out about six podcast apps, and eventually found what I was looking for.
  • I have a large iTunes library that has come from...various sources. I'm super OCD and would like all of the song names/artists/albums/art/etc/etc to be correct and up-to-date. Can you point me in the best direction for an automated solution to this? Sure.

How Do I Submit a Question?

Facebook Annoyances, Retrieving Stolen Laptops, and Six-Strike SafetyThere are two ways to send in your question:

Please keep your questions as brief as possible. This means about 3-5 sentences for emails and 30-60 seconds for calls and videos. Your questions can be specific, but broader questions are generally better because they'll apply to more people. For example, "how can I breathe new life into my old PDA?" is much better than "what can I do with an old HP iPAQ 210?" Either way, we look forward to hearing from you!
