Why Oracle And Salesforce, Once Bitter Rivals, Are Now On Cloud Nine

cloudbuddies1280Marc Benioff and Larry Ellison, the CEOs of two of the more powerful enterprise companies in the world -- Salesforce.com and Oracle -- are not known to be the chummiest of execs. Before this week's sudden truce -- which will see the two companies integrate their cloud services -- the only clouds that connected the two were dark and foreboding ones, as the two pitted themselves and their companies against each other in brinkmanship-style competition, chasing similar acquisitions and similar strategies to stay within sight of each other.

Sts. Peter and Paul Church of Norwich marks 75th anniversary

Longtime parishioners of Saints Peter and Paul Church said Saturday that the Norwich church is like another family to them, with strong ties to the community.

The church on Elizabeth Street celebrated its 75th anniversary on Saturday afternoon, the feast day of Saints Peter and Paul.

The Most Rev. Michael R. Cote, bishop of Norwich, celebrated Mass, which was followed by a reception of about 140 people in the church hall.

?This is a special occasion for us and our whole parish,? its pastor, The Rev. Leszek T. Janik, said. ?It?s an honor for me to be with these people and celebrate together a significant anniversary.?

Janik, pastor for the last two years, said parishioners are very dedicated.

?We have so many different groups of people involved on a regular basis in many different ministries in the church, like the Altar Society, in charge of decorating the church on a regular basis.?

The society has about 15 regular members that decorate the church for different observances.

?It?s very meaningful, and very visible,? Janik said.

Carol Cieslukowski has been a parishioner since she was a young girl.

?It?s my church,? she said. ?Over the years it?s had a lot of activities and been very involved with sports for youth from the west side. We all grew up with it. It?s family.?

The parish community was established in 1936 and the cornerstone was laid a year later. The first Mass was celebrated on Easter Sunday, 1938.

Built to accommodate 600 worshippers, the church was designed in Romanesque style. Donations from parishioners, card parties and lawn festivals helped fund construction costs.

The church underwent a significant exterior and interior renovation in 2011 and 2012, Parish Chairman Daniel Leone said.

The parishioners are what give Saints Peter and Paul strength, Leone, a member since 1975, said.

?People are faithful. It?s the Catholic belief. People are so giving of their time and treasure.?

Leone and his young family moved to the area in 1975 and began attending Mass at the church.

?My children had their confirmations and first communions here,? he said. ?It sure has a lot of memories.?

One of the wonderful things about getting your first iPhone was the sheer self-sufficient simplicity of the thing?here was a device that served as a map, mp3 player, notebook, phone, and anything else you might need, all crunched into a beautiful little package. But if this year's WWDC was any indication, that era of autonomous Apple devices is nearing an end.

Google Reader is on its deathbed, slated to meet its end on July 1st. Its demise has been looming in the distance for a while, so this should come as no surprise. And while this is certainly a time of mourning, there's the unseemly business of finding a replacement. Here's a list of platform agnostic alternatives that should help make the transition as painless as possible. We're sorry for your loss.

Spieth takes share of early lead at Congressional

BETHESDA, Md. (AP) ? Jordan Spieth, playing with nothing to lose, gave himself another chance to win going into the weekend at the AT&T National.

Spieth hit every green in regulation Friday and extended his streak to 29 holes without a bogey on a tough Congressional course, giving him a 5-under 66 and a share of the lead with Roberto Castro (69) before storms halted the second round.

They were at 7-under 135, with the round to be completed Saturday morning.

Players went back out to the practice range after a two-hour delay, only for more storms to approach and extended the suspension until the PGA Tour called it for the day. Andres Romero was at 5 under with five holes remaining. No one else was within four shots of the lead.

Spieth is the 19-year-old Texan who started the season with no status, uncertain where he was going to play. He now has earned over $900,000 ? the equivalent of being No. 39 on the PGA Tour money list ? and is assured of a tour card when the new season starts in October.

But he won't be eligible for the lucrative FedEx Cup playoffs unless he's a PGA Tour member, and he can't be a member this year unless he wins.

"Honestly, I think it's a great position to be in," Spieth said. "I'm just free swinging. I can't be in the playoffs unless I win, and that makes winning the No. 1 goal. You'd like to get in the playoffs and play against the top players, the best players from this year. It's everyone's goal out here to win the FedEx Cup. My goal is to move up the world rankings as much as I can, and that's the way to do it, is to get into those playoffs."

D.H. Lee had a 66 and was two shots behind at 5-under 139. Cameron Tringale (67) and James Driscoll (69) were another shot behind, while the group at 3-under 139 included former British Open champion Stewart Cink (69), Gary Woodland (69) and David Lingmerth, who went from around the cut line to contention with a 65.

Spieth has lived up to the hype he first generated when he played late on Sunday in the Byron Nelson Championship at age 16 and tied for 16th. In one year at Texas, the Longhorns won the NCAA title. And in six months as a pro, he has shown quickly that he belongs.

He already has four top 10s and has special temporary membership, meaning he gets unlimited exemptions. His goal was to somehow get a PGA Tour card for 2013-14 season, and a win would be over the top.

Even so, the teenager who was born just three years before Tiger Woods turned pro is savvy to realize the tournament is not even halfway over.

"I can't really think about that at this point," he said. "There's a long way to go. I'm kind of free swinging. I've gotten in a position where I can play a pretty full schedule this year, and I know I'll have my card for next year. Now all there's left to do is try and get a win to make the playoffs. So I'm just going out there trying to win and being aggressive, and hopefully, it will work out for me."

Scoring was slightly better at Congressional, a course that has hosted the U.S. Open three times. Warmer weather in the morning made the ball fly a little farther and shortened the longest PGA Tour course on the mainland.

Spieth began his day with a 25-foot birdie putt on the first hole, avoided a long three-putt from above the hole on No. 4 by making a 12-foot par putt and then picked up four birdies over the final five holes on the front nine for a 31. He made nine pars on the back nine, never coming close to a bogey.

It was a clean round, executed well by a teenagers who plays like he knows where he is going.

"I'm excited for what the weekend is going to bring," he said.

Castro tied the course record on the TPC Sawgrass in May with a 63 to lead the opening round of The Players Championship, and then he followed with a 78 and never seriously challenge the rest of the week. After opening with a 66 at Congressional, he dropped a shot early from a fairway bunker on No. 3 and was plodding along until finishing the back nine with a pair of birdies, and then adding a birdie on the par-5 16th.

"I felt good," he said. "I probably learned a lot there (at Sawgrass) and realized that one round doesn't mean anything ? just got to keep going. And I was able to do that."

Defending champion Woods is not playing because of an elbow injury, and U.S. Open champion Justin Rose withdrew earlier in the week because of fatigue. Some of the other big names most likely won't be around for the weekend, such as Hunter Mahan, who had a 72 and was at 5-over 147. Masters champion Adam Scott traded birdies and bogeys in his round of 71 that left him nine shots behind.

Brandt Snedeker had to salvage a scrappy round with two late birdies for a 71, leaving him five shots behind.

DIVOTS: The tee on the par-5 ninth hole was moved forward Friday, making it play only 613 yards. Six players went for the green in two ? compared with none Thursday when the hole was 635 yards ? with Angel Cabrera and Jason Day going just over the back. Both made birdie. ... Charlie Beljan, who opened with an 84, called officials Friday morning to say he had withdrawn. ... Russell Henley holed out from 149 yards for eagle on No. 9. He was at 3-under 139.

Obama recasts chase for Snowden as unexceptional

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The last thing President Barack Obama wants to do is turn Edward Snowden into a grand enemy of the state or a Daniel Ellsberg-type hero who speaks truth to power.

In the shifting narrative of the Obama administration, the man whose leaks of top-secret material about government surveillance programs have tied the national security apparatus in knots and brought charges under the Espionage Act has now been demoted to a common fugitive unworthy of international intrigue or extraordinary pursuit by the U.S. government.

A "29-year-old hacker," in the words of Obama; fodder for a made-for-TV movie, perhaps, but not much more.

"This is not exceptional from a legal perspective," the president said Thursday of Snowden's efforts to avoid capture by hopscotching from Hawaii to Hong Kong to Russia.

"I'm not going to have one case of a suspect who we're trying to extradite suddenly being elevated to the point where I've got to start doing wheeling and dealing and trading on a whole host of other issues simply to get a guy extradited," the president told reporters in Senegal.

It was the second time in a week that the administration had toned down its rhetoric as Snowden remained out of reach and first China and then Russia refused to send him back.

Just Monday, Secretary of State John Kerry was talking tough against China and calling Snowden a traitor whose actions are "despicable and beyond description." By Tuesday, Kerry was calling for "calm and reasonableness" on the matter, and adding, "We're not looking for a confrontation. We are not ordering anybody."

There are plenty of reasons for Obama to pull back, beyond his professed desire to avoid international horse-trading for the leaker.

The president, in his own words, has "a whole lot of business to do with China and Russia." Why increase tensions in an already uneasy relationship when Obama is looking for Russia's cooperation in finding a path to peace in Syria, for example?

In addition, less-heated dialogue could make it easier to broker Snowden's return because, despite the latest shrugs, U.S. officials very much want him.

"There's a lot of signaling going on," said Steve Aftergood, director of the Project on Government Secrecy for the Federation of American Scientists. "If the White House were issuing ultimatums, then Russia might feel obliged not to cooperate. But if it's merely one request among many others, that might make it easier to advance to a resolution."

The president also may have a U.S. audience in mind for his comments.

Obama's Democratic base includes plenty of defenders of civil liberties who are sympathetic to Snowden's professed goal of making government more transparent.

Benjamin Pauker, managing editor of Foreign Policy magazine, said the president was loath to elevate Snowden to a state enemy or "an Ellsberg-type truth-teller," referring to the 1971 leaker of the Pentagon Papers, which showed the U.S. government had misled the public about the war in Vietnam.

Ellsberg himself recently called Snowden's revelations the most significant disclosures in the nation's history.

The administration, though, would rather marginalize Snowden, a former National Security Agency systems analyst who is thought to have custody of more classified documents.

"Calling him a hacker, as opposed to a government contractor or an NSA employee, brings him down a notch to someone who's an irritant, as opposed to someone who has access to integral intelligence files," Pauker said. "To externalize him and brand him with a black-hat hacker tag distances him from the government."

The disdainful talk isn't just coming from the White House.

Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, called Snowden "a high school dropout who had a whole series of both academic troubles and employment troubles" after a recent closed hearing on the leaks. The committee's top Democrat, C.A. "Dutch" Ruppersberger from Maryland, called Snowden "a legend in his own mind" for claiming to be able to use NSA systems to access any email or phone call anywhere ? something the NSA's director has said can't be done.

There may also be face-saving benefits for Obama in cutting down Snowden, who turned 30 last week. An unsuccessful full-court press for Snowden's return would only show the limitations of Obama's international influence.

It's not the first time a president has tried to reset expectations by first elevating and then playing down the importance of an international fugitive who eluded capture, at least for a time.

President George W. Bush went from putting out a "dead-or-alive" ultimatum for 9-11 terror mastermind Osama bin Laden to dismissing him as "a person who's now been marginalized."

"I just don't spend that much time on him," Bush said in March 2002.

Candidate Barack Obama pledged during the 2008 presidential campaign: "We will kill bin Laden, we will crush al-Qaida. That has to be our biggest national security priority."

By January 2009, just days before his inauguration, Obama was saying: "My preference, obviously would be to capture or kill him. But if we have so tightened the noose that he's in a cave somewhere and can't even communicate with his operatives, then we would meet our goal of protecting America."

As it turned out, he got him.

Senate passes immigration bill, but future prospects are cloudy ...

The Senate passed a comprehensive immigration reform bill with bipartisan support on Thursday, the culmination of months of negotiations between Democratic and Republican senators. But their effort faces diminishing prospects in the Republican-led House, where Speaker John Boehner reiterated on Thursday that he would not vote on the Senate?s bill.

The bill passed on a 68-32 vote presided over by Vice President Joe Biden. Every Democratic senator voted ?aye? along with 14 Republicans, including the GOP members of the bipartisan ?Gang of Eight? who negotiated the bill: Marco Rubio of Florida, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, and John McCain and Jeff Flake of Arizona.

?The finish line is very close to here,? Majority Leader Harry Reid said in a speech immediately preceding the vote. ?Down this very long hallway to the House of Representatives.?

In an effort to bring more Republicans on board and put pressure on the House to follow their lead, Democrats agreed to back an amendment by GOP senators Bob Corker and John Hoeven adding $38 billion to border security. While its passage brought some Republicans into the fold, it fell just short of reformers? stated goals of attracting 70 or more votes. And if the goal was to make the House feel compelled to act, they haven?t shown much willingness to do so.

Related: DOMA decision to end exile of gay couples abroad

While Reid said he was ?confident? that Congress would follow suit, recent developments have pro-reform lawmakers concerned that House Republican leaders are souring on a broad immigration bill along the Senate?s lines. On Thursday, Boehner set the bar high for a vote on any immigration legislation, saying that it would have to first garner support from a majority of Republicans.

?The House is not going to take up and vote on whatever the Senate passes,? Boehner told reporters. ?We?re going to do our own bill through regular order, and it will be legislation that reflects the will of our majority and the will of the American people.?

Few political observers believe there are enough GOP votes in the conservative House, whose members are mostly insulated from Latino voters in safe seats, to pass a bill with a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. Recently, the House Judiciary Committee has started work on legislation aimed at criminalizing and deporting undocumented immigrants with help from local authorities, a policy modeled on Arizona?s SB 1070 law, which helped spark a backlash from Latino voters around the country. They could follow through with several smaller bills on high-tech visas and guest workers, but Senate Democrats and Latino groups are unlikely to support anything short of a comprehensive package that includes a citizenship component.

The Senate?s bill includes four main components. First, it would provide limited legal status to undocumented immigrants who register with the government, pay a fine, and pass a background check. It would also give many of them the option to apply for a green card after 10 years and citizenship after 13 if they stay out of legal trouble and learn English. Second, it would crack down on illegal hiring by requiring businesses to check whether their employees are authorized to work using the government?s E-Verify system. Third, it would overhaul the legal immigration system, allowing businesses to hire low-skilled workers for jobs they can demonstrate Americans won?t take and encouraging high-skilled foreign-born graduates to stay in the United States by making it easier to acquire a visa. Finally, the bill would massively expand the nation?s border security apparatus by doubling the border patrol to 40,000 agents, building hundreds of miles of fence, funding a slew of new technology to stop illegal crossings, and instituting a system to track undocumented immigrants who overstay their visas.

These components are all designed to work together as a unit. The legalization and worker visa components are an acknowledgement that existing undocumented immigrants have become a permanent part of the national fabric and that many businesses, especially agriculture, require migrant labor to function. In exchange, the border security and E-verify portions are intended to discourage future illegal entry.

NASA probe finds new zone at doorstep to interstellar space

By Irene Klotz

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - Reports last summer than NASA's long-lived Voyager 1 space probe had finally left the solar system turned out to be a bit premature, scientists said on Thursday.

Rather, the spacecraft, which was launched in 1977 for a five-year mission to study Jupiter and Saturn, has found itself in a previously unknown region between the outermost part of the solar system and interstellar space.

It is an unusual and unexpected thoroughfare, a place where charged particles from the sun have virtually disappeared and those coming from galactic cosmic rays beyond the solar system are plentiful.

By that measure alone, scientists initially thought Voyager 1 did indeed finally reach interstellar space on August 25, 2012, becoming the first man-made object to leave the solar system.

But one key measurement killed that theory. The magnetic field in which Voyager 1 traveled was still aligned like the sun's. If the probe were truly in interstellar space, scientists expect that the direction of the magnetic field would be different.

"You can never exclude a really peculiar coincidence, but this was very strong evidence that we're still in the heliosheath" - the bubble of plasma from the sun that surrounds the solar system, said Voyager scientist Leonard Burlaga, with NASA's Goddard Space Fight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

Additional measurements later turned up a second odd reading. The cosmic ray particles were not uniformly distributed around Voyager 1 like scientists expected them to be in interstellar space. Instead, the charged particles, which stem from distant supernova explosions, were oriented in particular directions.

That led scientists to conclude that Voyager 1 was in some sort of magnetic boundary zone, where particles from inside and outside the solar system could easily swap places, but where the sun's influence still reigns supreme.

"We have no explanation for why we even found this new region," Burlaga told Reuters.

So far, Voyager's sister probe, Voyager 2, which is exiting the solar system in a different direction, has not encountered the same phenomena - nor may it ever.

"Voyager 2 has seen exactly what the models predicted we would see, unlike Voyager 1, which didn't," said lead scientist Ed Stone, with the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California.

Voyager 1 may be in an unusual place where the heliosheath and interstellar space connect, he added.

Voyager 1 is now about 11 billion miles (18 billion km) from Earth. At that distance, it takes radio signals, which move at the speed of light, 17 hours to make a one-way trip to Earth.

Scientists do not know how much farther Voyager has to travel to reach interstellar space. The spacecraft, which is powered by the slow decay of radioactive plutonium, will begin running out of energy for its science instruments in 2020. By 2025, it will be completely out of power.

The research appears in the journal Science this week.

14 Underground Lairs Fit For a Mega-Villain

Batman had one under his mansion outside Gotham. Osama bin Laden was found in one just in Pakistan. Underground lairs are an integral part of pop culture fantasy and real-life current events?but whether they're fake or real, they're always cloaked in intrigue. And frankly, they're cool as hell.

They're also increasingly common. In a Vanity Fair article this month, we learned that in cities where historic preservation is a major issue?like London?more and more homeowners are expanding downward, digging out space under their Victorian homes for "underground recreation centers, golf-simulation rooms, squash courts, bowling alleys, hair salons, ballrooms, and car elevators to the underground garages for their vintage Bentleys."

In other cases, the landscape itself dictates the terms of a lair?for example, in some examples below, you'll see entire buildings carved into the face of boulders and cliffs. And often, an underground space is the perfect place to store sensitive materials?whether it's vintage photos or internet servers.

Below, you'll find a collection of lairs that house everything from luxury homes to public fire brigades.

Santorum: Rubio?s support of immigration bill could hurt presidential prospects

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who is quietly laying the groundwork for another presidential run, said on Wednesday that Republican presidential hopefuls who support the federal immigration overhaul will struggle to find support among the party's primary voters in 2016.

During an interview on the Andrea Tantaros radio show, Santorum said lawmakers like Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, a lead author of the Senate bipartisan immigration bill, would suffer "consequences" for supporting the bill if they choose to run for president.

"The issue of immigration and respecting the rule of law in this country is a very important thing for Republican voters across the country. The idea that there are Republicans in Washington, D.C., who are going to say, 'Well, the rule of law isn't that important, the idea of people coming into this country have done so illegally and we're going to basically treat them the same as people who came here legally,' is just not going to go over well in a Republican primary," Santorum said when asked specifically if Rubio's support for an immigration overhaul would hurt his chances in 2016. "I think there's going to be certainly consequences for folks who don't understand the importance of the respect for the rule of law that Republicans have."

Conservatives have criticized Rubio for his work on the immigration bill, which offers a pathway to legality for immigrants living in the country unlawfully. Rubio said on Tuesday that he plans to announce a decision on a presidential run in 2014.

When Santorum first ran for president in 2012, he won the popular vote in 11 primary and caucus elections. Although he conceded the race to Mitt Romney in April 2012, Santorum has continued to advocate for his ideas through a nonprofit group and give speeches in Iowa regularly. Santorum announced last week that he has joined EchoLight Studios, an entertainment company that produces faith-based films, as CEO.

In the interview with Tantaros, Santorum said he was "very open" to running for president again.

"The position I've taken here at this movie studio, EchoLight, has not in any way changed my thinking on running again in 2016. I'm very open to that. I think that, in fact, that some of the work that I'm doing at the movie studio is actually in concert with that," he said. "I think this is probably a good way to spend my time and energy potentially between two runs."

Santorum even took an early jab at possible Democratic presidential contender Hillary Clinton when asked about her handling of the attack on an American compound in Benghazi, Libya, while she was secretary of state.

"I don't think she's the right candidate for the country, and I'm hopeful that if you look at her entire record, that it precludes her," Santorum said.

6 Green Home Choices You Won't Regret | Healthy Green Living ...

Going on a carbon diet? Planning a green domestic overhaul? If you are energy bill looks anything as mine did, it could be the smartest thing you do all year.?

Researchers believe about a third of energy in buildings is wasted by inefficiency and pointless usage. At least as much money is being spent to subsidize these losses. As the cost of energy rises, ?greening? your home and property becomes ever more appealing.?

Luckily, it has never been so easy to make the switch to an environmental mindset, especially on your own home territory. Just take it one-step at a time. Here, I?ve gathered six basic eco-friendly home improvements you can make in the short term that will help not only the environment,?but your health and budget, too. Let?s take a look.

1. Tread Lightly

Got hardwood floors? All-natural bamboo is becoming a popular eco-friendly alternative to hardwood flooring. The problem with slow-maturing hard woods like oak and walnut, for instance, is they are difficult to replace in the natural environment.?

Bamboo, a cherished symbol of simplicity, grows much faster than conventional timber and is a considerably more sustainable flooring choice. Famously durable, bamboo is better at repelling water than normal hardwood floors?and it?s strikingly easy to refinish.

The versatile material costs about the same as hardwood, averaging $5 or $6 per square foot. Choosing natural bamboo over fragile old growth lumber is an effective way to tread more lightly on Mother Earth.

For more information why you should use Bamboo click here.

2. Green Your Ride

Since the largest single impact on the planet is transportation, there?s plenty of room for improvement in this area. While airplanes are the least green mode of transportation,?the number one most efficient way to travel is by bicycle. Walking is also quite healthy for both you and the earth.?

Cars and trucks? Not so much, although carpools, high MPG ratings and electric vehicles can help. If you must drive your own vehicle, it?s very important to keep its maintenance on schedule. An auto in poor working order is much worse for the environment.?

Keep an eye on your tires? air pressure in particular, topping off the air about once a month. Flabby tires waste fuel. So do older cars compared to newer ones. The latest vehicles are much better at minimizing inefficiency and harmful emissions. That said, avoiding personal automobiles altogether is by far the most eco-friendly choice.

Read Get Fit and Go Green.

3. Buy Local, Recycle Local

Recycling provides big benefits to the planet?s atmosphere by reducing overall materials consumption. No matter the material that is recycled, its production is likely to have required enormous amounts of energy to produce, process and ship. All this energy amounts to a huge carbon footprint.?

The more we recycle, the more we lessen our negative impacts on the earth.?For the same reason, it?s important not only to recycle, but to purchase goods from local sellers and producers in the first place. Buying and recycling locally is a great way to support your community and keep the earth clean and green.

Read this Recycling Guide.

4. Insulation of Champions

Insulation helps your house use energy more efficiently by decreasing the amount of hot and cold air lost to the outside atmosphere. Older homes frequently need more insulation, but even newer ones can get a cost-effective upgrade and see a positive return on investment. This year, insulation costs from about $1.30 to $1.70 per square foot.?

Don?t forget that windows are major hotspots for insulation issues. Windows don?t just let light in and out; they also serve as escape hatches for your expensive heating and cooling.?Even if you filled every draft with stuffing and caulk, the gains would quickly be wiped out in a house with poorly resistant windows.

How do you know the best windows to buy? I know how easy it is to get bogged down in the murky science of window efficiency. Unless you?re a true fenestration geek, I recommend the more straightforward solution, which is to ensure any new windows are marked with the blue ENERGY STAR logo.?

The STAR means someone has already been paid to assess the product?s efficiency on your behalf, and they liked what they saw. The ENERGY STAR method is a simple shopping trick for identifying energy-efficient products without having to memorize a list of environmentally-friendly brands.

5. Fluorescence is Key

Speaking of ENERGY STAR, you can also use the ES label to guide your light bulb purchasing decisions. More people than ever know to look for the ENERGY STAR-rated curly-shaped CFLs, or compact fluorescent lamps, when their old light bulbs burn out.?

Why all the fuss? CFLs help you minimize the amount of tribute you must make to the utility company. They?re more efficient and last ten times longer than their filament-based counterparts. It?s nothing against Thomas Edison; incandescence had a great century-long run, but the future belongs to cheaper and more eco-friendly fluorescence.

6. Baseload Sunshine

I think of my home?s lighting as a system that includes sunshine entering from the outdoors. Did you know you can use vitamin-rich sunlight to both light and warm your home?s interior during the daytime??Not only is sunlight free to all, it is conveyed straight from the sky to your threshold, carbon-free.

During the day, let in natural light first, and then top off as needed with artificial lighting. This principle works with cooling, too; when you want to keep the house cool, shut out major sun streams before?you turn on the A/C.?

Of course, the ultimate in solar efficiency and productivity would come from installing your own solar panel. The cost of photovoltaic cells has dramatically dropped in the last several years, so crunch the math and see how long it would take for a solar panel investment to pay for itself. It may be shorter than you think.

Texas Senator Filibusters to Block Restrictive Abortion Bill

At 11:18 a.m. CT Tuesday morning, Texas State Sen. Wendy Davis donned hot pink sneakers and began what she hoped would be a 13-hour filibuster to block a bill that would heavily limit women's access to abortions in her state.

If she hopes to beat the GOP-controlled Senate's proposal, Davis, a Democrat, must continue holding the Senate floor until the special legislative session ends at midnight on Wednesday. Gov. Rick Perry would have to call forth another 30-day special session to reintroduce the bill into the state's legislature if Davis succeeds with her filibuster.

At its core, the bill in question would ban all abortions after the 20-week pregnancy mark and would require clinics to adhere to stricter regulations. Some of these regulations include upgrading facilities and reclassifying the clinics as surgical centers, which could prove to be expensive in rural areas.

Watch Wendy Davis' filibuster live from Texas.

The bill also gained national attention earlier this week when its sponsor, Rep. Jodie Laubenberg, a Republican, suggested that emergency room rape kits could be used to terminate pregnancies.

In an official statement posted on her website, Davis aimed her dissatisfaction with the bill at the Republican-controlled Senate, saying that "partisanship and ambition [in Texas] ? has risen to a level of profound irresponsibility and the raw abuse of power."

"The actions intended by our state's leaders hurt Texas; they hurt Texas women and their families. ? Mainstream families embrace the challenge to create the greatest possible Texas, yet are pushed back and held down by the narrow and divisive interests driving our state's leaders," the statement read further.

Five hours into the filibuster, Davis discussed testimony from physicians and women who would be most affected by the proposed legislation and answered questions from people in attendance.

While speaking, Davis must stand as long as she holds the floor and is not permitted to lean on the podium, eat or use the bathroom.

Other state measures that could be put on hold because of Davis's filibuster include a proposal to fund various transportation projects and a bill that would force Texas to adhere to a Supreme Court ruling that banned mandatory prison sentences for minors.

Sky adding more on demand content, revamping Go apps for summer

Lounging around in the sun is great and all, but what to do on a rainy day? One option is to get some TV time in, and Sky's got a few updates to share that might tempt you in front of a screen on dreary afternoons. At some point this summer, shows from Fox, Universal and SyFy will be available on Sky's On Demand service, as well as content from Disney if you're signed up for the Entertainment Extra package. Mobile apps will be getting a makeover, with "enhanced navigation" and a new design including bigger thumbnails when cruising through the VOD library. The Sky Go Xbox 360 app will also be updated to bring it in line with Microsoft's UI style. Furthermore, Sky Multiroom subscribers will get access to Sky Go Extra, which allows you to download content in addition to streaming, at no extra cost in early July. Vitamin D's overrated anyways.

Australia-Japan whaling case begins

Public hearings are under way in The Hague as Australia and Japan take their fight over whaling to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Australia will argue that Tokyo's scientific research programme - under which it kills whales - is commercial whaling in disguise.

Japan - which aims to catch up to 1,000 whales each year - says it is ready to defend its right to conduct research.

There has been a ban on commercial whaling since 1986.

Australia initiated the legal action at the top UN court in 2010.

'Halted'

The first round of oral arguments began on Wednesday, with Australia taking the floor for three days to set out its case that Japan's position that its whaling activities are for scientific purposes "is not only untenable, it is dangerous" for whale populations.

Japan will make its counter arguments over three days from next Tuesday. A further round of arguments, including an intervention from New Zealand, will then take place with the case wrapping up on 16 July - though a ruling is then not expected for several months.

The Legalities of Whaling

  • Objection - A country formally objects to the International Whaling Commission (IWC) moratorium, declaring itself exempt. Example: Norway
  • Scientific - A nation issues unilateral "scientific permits"; any IWC member can do this. Example: Japan
  • Indigenous (aka Aboriginal subsistence) - IWC grants permits to indigenous groups for subsistence food. Example: Alaskan Inupiat

Japan's whaling fleet leaves for the Southern Ocean in November or December each year, with a quota of of minke whales and fin whales whales to catch for what it says are scientific research purposes. Meat from the whales is sold commercially.

In recent years, catches have fallen substantially, mainly because of disruption techniques employed by anti-whaling activists.

Canberra alleges that the research programme breaches international laws and has no relevance to marine conservation. It says more than 10,000 whales have been killed under the programme.

"Australia's views on whaling are well established. We strongly oppose all commercial whaling, including so-called 'scientific' whale hunting by Japan," said Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus, who is representing Australia in court.

"We want to see the practice halted once and for all."

Tokyo says there are cultural reasons behind the annual hunt and that its whaling is sustainable. It also argues that its research provides information on whale stocks with a view to re-examining the ban on commercial whaling in the future.

"We have a scientific research programme in accordance with the convention on whaling and we are strictly abiding by the treaty obligations," government spokesman Noriyuki Shikata told the BBC.

New Zealand is supporting Australia at the ICJ and the court's decision is considered legally binding.

Pope names commission of inquiry into Vatican bank

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Pope Francis took a key step Wednesday toward reforming the troubled Vatican bank, naming a commission of inquiry to look into its activities amid a new money-laundering probe and continued questions about the very nature of the secretive financial institution.

It was the second time in as many weeks that Francis has intervened to get information out of the Institute for Religious Works, or IOR. On June 15, he filled a key vacancy in the bank's governing structure, tapping a trusted prelate to be his eyes inside the bank.

On Wednesday, he named a commission to investigate the bank's legal structure and activities "to allow for a better harmonization with the universal mission of the Apostolic See," according to the legal document that created it.

Francis named five people to the commission, including two Americans: Monsignor Peter Wells, a top official in the Vatican secretariat of state, and Mary Ann Glendon, a Harvard law professor, former U.S. ambassador to the Holy See and current president of a pontifical academy.

American cardinals were among the most vocal in demanding a wholesale reform of the Vatican bureaucracy ? and the Vatican bank ? in the meetings running up to the March conclave that elected Francis pope. The demands were raised following revelations in leaked documents last year that told of dysfunction, petty turf wars and allegations of corruption in the Holy See's governance.

Francis, who has made clear he has no patience for corruption and wants a "poor" church, has already named a separate commission of cardinals to advise him on the broader question of reforming the Vatican bureaucracy as a whole.

The bank commission's members have the authority to gather documents, data and information about the bank's legal status and activities, even overriding normal secrecy rules to do so. Members can receive information from anyone in the Vatican bureaucracy as well as people who spontaneously volunteer information, and the commission can refer to outside advisers if necessary, according to the terms.

The bank's administration continues to function as normal, as does the Vatican's new financial watchdog agency which has supervisory control over it.

The commission will report back to Francis ? presumably with both information and recommendations ? and then will be dissolved, the document states. No timeframe was given but the commission is to start working soon.

The Vatican bank was founded in 1942 by Pope Pius XII to manage assets destined for religious or charitable works. Located in a tower just inside the gates of Vatican City, it also manages the pension system for the Vatican's thousands of employees.

The announcement of the committee came amid a new embarrassment for the Vatican in which prosecutors in the southern city of Salerno have placed a senior Vatican official under investigation for alleged money-laundering.

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, confirmed Wednesday that Monsignor Nunzio Scarano had been suspended temporarily from his position in one of the Vatican's key finance offices, the Administration for the Patrimony of the Apostolic See. Scarano has said he did nothing wrong, though in an interview with the local daily, La Citta di Salerno, he acknowledged he received bad advice from his accountant.

Italian daily Corriere della Sera reported over the weekend that Italy's central bank had asked the Vatican's financial watchdog agency for information about Scarano's Vatican bank account as part of the probe. Lombardi said he didn't know if the Vatican had responded to the request.

Such exchanges of financial information are the hallmark of the financial transparency that the Vatican has committed itself to as part of its efforts to join the "white list" of countries in the fight against money-laundering and terrorist financing.

The Vatican in November must submit a progress report to the Council of Europe's Moneyval committee on the steps it has taken to comply with such international financial transparency norms. The Vatican passed Moneyval's key test on its first try last summer but received poor or failing grades for its bank and its financial oversight agency.

There have long been questions about just what the IOR actually is and does ? questions which the commission presumably will try to iron out for Francis. Vatican officials have long insisted it's not even a bank, since it doesn't perform key banking activities like making loans.

It does however take deposits, transfer money and invest for its clients, performing asset management services that in 2012 helped earn it 86.6 million euros in profit on 7.1 billion euros in total assets under management.

Some cardinals have questioned if the Vatican needs such a financial institution and whether its activities are even in keeping with church teaching.

In 2010, Italian financial police seized 23 million euros from an IOR account and Rome prosecutors placed the IOR's then-president and general director under investigation for alleged violations of Italy's anti-money laundering norms after they conducted a transaction from an IOR account at an Italian bank. The money was eventually unfrozen. The men technically remain under investigation but nearly three years on, haven't been charged.

The Vatican bank's workings have long been shrouded in secrecy. Most famously, it was implicated in a scandal over the collapse of Italy's Banco Ambrosiano in the 1980s in one of Italy's largest fraud cases. Roberto Calvi, the head of Banco Ambrosiano, was found hanging from Blackfriars Bridge in London in 1982 in circumstances that remain mysterious.

Banco Ambrosiano collapsed following the disappearance of $1.3 billion in loans the bank had made to several dummy companies in Latin America. The Vatican had provided letters of credit for the loans.

While denying any wrongdoing, the Vatican bank agreed to pay $250 million to Ambrosiano's creditors.

Russia rejects US demand for Snowden's extradition

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russia's foreign minister has rejected U.S. demands to extradite National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden, who has apparently stopped in Moscow while trying to evade U.S. justice.

Sergey Lavrov said that Snowden hasn't crossed the Russian border and insisted that Russia has nothing to do with him, his relations with U.S. justice or his travel plans.

Speaking at a news conference Tuesday, he angrily lashed out at the U.S. demands for the extradition and warnings of negative consequences if Moscow fails to comply.

Lavrov said that accusing Russia of "violation of U.S. laws and even some sort of conspiracy" with regard to Snowden is "absolutely ungrounded and unacceptable."

He wouldn't specify the location of Snowden, who booked a Havana-bound flight from Moscow Monday but didn't show up on the plane.

Publication of Innovation Task Force Report: ?The Role of UK Business Schools in Driving Innovation in the Domestic Economy? and the formal Response of the Association of Business Schools?

(Foreword of the report?by The Rt Hon. the Lord Heseltine CH)

All our competing economies have in place much better coordination of the numerous companies that go to make up a local economy. First, central government is too remote and too organised on functional lines, at the cost of place-based strategy, and takes little interest in the quality of advice it seeks from our towns and cities. Second, at a local level, few companies belong to their representative organisations and, indeed, it is difficult to gain access to the lists of companies operating in a local economy.
Other nations join up such activities, with the consequence that there is more integrated activity. There is a wider spread of knowledge, greater shared experience and an understanding of the benefits of community interdependence. It is easier to find out what is going on, and where to turn for help, and to seek advice from someone who has been there. We need a signposted single point of service and advice for companies. The business schools should help to fill the gap.

The Association of Business Schools (ABS) has today (21 May 2013) published the?final report?(PDF, 64 pages)?of the independent Innovation Task Force and the Associations formal response to the recommendations of the report.

The Innovation Task Force was co-chaired by Professor Richard Thorpe, Professor of Management Development and Pro Dean Research at the University of Leeds Business School and Richard Rawlinson, Vice-President, Booz & Company and was made up of representatives of business schools, industry and other interested stakeholder bodies.

The stimulus for the Task Force came from the Minister for Universities and Science, David Willetts.? He raised questions on innovation and engagement in the context of current economic policy imperatives and long-standing concerns about the education of British managers, and effectiveness with which academic and scientific innovation in the UK has translated into practice and commercial success.

Universities and Science Minister David Willetts said:

?Business schools are vital to growth, but all the incentives have been for them to focus on research.

This important report, together with Lord Young's work, offers business schools a key role their local economies.? Sir Andrew Witty is also carrying out an independent review into how universities can work with business and other local interested parties to increase economic growth".

The final report identifies opportunities for practical action to increase the impact of British business schools on innovation and growth in the United Kingdom economy. It provides specific guidance for business schools and universities, for faculty and students, and for the government. Together, the Task Force believes that the actions proposed can make a significant difference to the contribution that British business schools make to the economy in which they operate.

There are six areas where the independent Task Force think change is needed:
1.???????? Design practice into courses.
2.???????? Bring more practitioner experience into the faculty.
3.???????? Develop and manage company relationships institutionally.
4.???????? Improve measurement and assessment of research impact.
5.???????? Promote research in larger teams, and centres with multi-dimensional roles.
6.???????? Move to more distinctly defined roles for different institutions

Car bombs kill 39 in Iraqi capital Baghdad

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Ten car-bomb explosions killed at least 39 people across the Iraqi capital on Monday, police and medical sources said.

In the central district of Karada, two parked car bombs went off killing at least eight people, and another two car bombs exploded simultaneously near a market in the western district of Jihad, killing eight.

Violence has been increasing in Iraq in recent months, with more than 1,000 people killed in May alone, making it the deadliest month since the sectarian bloodletting of 2006-07.

Insurgents including al Qaeda's Iraqi affiliate have been regaining ground and recruits from the country's Sunni minority, which feels sidelined since the U.S.-led invasion toppled former dictator Saddam Hussein and empowered majority Shi'ites.

Sectarian tensions in Iraq and the wider region have been inflamed by the civil war in Syria, where mainly Sunni Muslim rebels are fighting to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad, whose Alawite sect derives from Shi'ite Islam.
